Can I use this for our soon-to-be-born son?We have no Irish connections?
I think it's such a gorgeous name.

I know a little Kilian (spelt that way). He's really cute and the name is unusual, but easy to pronounce and spell. I think yes, and the lack of an Irish connection wouldn't be an obstacle.

reuset · 14/07/2015 21:13

Yes, it's a great name.

A fan of Cillian Murphy perchance? Grin

villainousbroodmare · 14/07/2015 21:14

Go for it! Lovely name.

RabidFairy · 14/07/2015 21:15

Love it!

turdfairynomore · 14/07/2015 21:19

I like the sound of it but not the look of it. A bit too like "Gillian" maybe?

BorisJohnsonsHair · 14/07/2015 21:21

Dislike it intensely. Sounds hard and unfriendly. Sorry!

maggiethemagpie · 14/07/2015 22:04

I know it is pronounced 'Killian' but I always want to say 'Sillian' when I see it. If you live in England this could be a problem?

SnozzberryPie · 14/07/2015 22:15

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it, sorry

Marcipex · 14/07/2015 22:19

A cross between Cilla and Gillian.

Tetleys · 15/07/2015 08:03

I think you can. I think there are two actors called Cillian.

One is less well known, Cillian Scott. But it's easy enough. If you spell it with a K that could be easier.

ShadowFire · 15/07/2015 08:06

I was wondering whether the 'C' is a hard C or a soft C, but I see a pp's answered that one.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2015 10:50

There are as many Killians in Ireland as there are Cillians so feel free to spell it with a K if you think that would make life a bit easier for him. Killian is also quite a popular name in France and I bet very few of them have Irish roots.

So I say use it if you like it, Cillian Murphy has brought it to a wider audience so I don't think it will raise too many eyebrows.

CherryBonBon · 15/07/2015 10:53

Cillian is lovely.

I don't like Killian. I find that a lot of Irish names lose their charm once spelled with a 'K'.

sweetpeame · 15/07/2015 10:57

It's a lovely name and fine to use even without Irish connections. Interesting re it's popularity in France, it's also popular in Germany (spelt with a K) and I'm pretty sure the majority of those parents don't have Irish connections.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 15/07/2015 11:02

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it, nor if it was a male or female name. I suspect your child will hate having to spell it to everyone who asks.

fanjodisfunction · 15/07/2015 13:57

I know a French boy called Killian, love it great name.

MamaLazarou · 15/07/2015 19:03

It's awful. How would it be shortened? Killy or Kill, that's how.

MrsPeeee · 15/07/2015 20:46

I really like it. With a C.

switchitoff · 15/07/2015 20:55

I think you can use an Irish name without any Irish connections if you want, but be prepared for lots of questions about whether you are Irish and how to spell it etc.

I know a Cillian, shortened to Cill and I can't get away from the fact that it sounds like an instruction: Kill Ian!

If you like the -ian ending there are lots of similar names: Damian, Gideon, Sebastian, Simeon

reuset · 15/07/2015 21:07

I didn't think much about the shortening! Cilly would be ok I think. Though the young Cillian I know doesn't seem to ever have his name shortened.

ToysRLuv · 15/07/2015 21:10

I would choose something else -am put off by the whoke "kill" thing.

barbecue · 15/07/2015 21:18

I don't like it, sorry.

3littlerabbits · 15/07/2015 21:21

Love it. Awesome name. Don't use it though because I want it for myself!

UrethraFranklin1 · 16/07/2015 12:00

Wouldnt know how to pronounce it? How could you not, its not remotely difficult?

Its a perfectly normal, common, average name. If british people cant cope with a simple, easy to spell and say name from their near neighbouring country, that is their own problem.

barbecue · 16/07/2015 14:49

Hmm It could be pronounced with a hard or soft C.
