Help with my stupid surname.

My surname is stupid. It is the noise a dog makes... but not Bark. The other one, the more stupid one.

Don't know what sex we're having and don't know where to start. Everything sounds ridiculous to me, DH & my names included. Bloody comedy surname.

What doesn't sound ridiculous with Woof?

Ooh love Conrad.

Our village has the Hoares, the Bumfords and the Maudlins.
Woof isn't so bad Smile

maitaimojito · 12/07/2015 22:33

I think he was! Grin

He had a one syllable name so perhaps he felt that the alternate pronunciation made it sound better!

scatterthenuns · 12/07/2015 22:35

Yeah Marci, quite pleased I'm not a Bumford.

I don't think it's necessary to consider the surname when choosing a first name unless extreme circumstances, like it makes an offensive word. yours is fine and I don't think you should let it dictate your choice. Just pick a name you love :)

MissMuffetisin · 12/07/2015 22:39

I knew someone with the surname Smelt

DoesItReallyMatter · 12/07/2015 22:40

I think Woof is a cool surname. It sounds German to me.

I think a good strong first name is best. I knew someone with a similar surname with a first name of Lawrence - I don't particularly like Lawrence but it was very effective at 'neutralising' the surname.

I've googled - there are a few Woofs around Wink

DoesItReallyMatter · 12/07/2015 22:42

Oh, I see someone already suggested Lawrence. .....great minds and all that Wink

I don't mind a bit of alliteration either...

William Woof
Warrick Woof

KanyesVest · 12/07/2015 23:22

Woof is cool! I went to school with cousins whose surnames were Fox and Wolf. I really wanted to be part of their gang. DH's cousins are the Ramsbottoms. Very glad mil didn't insist on double barrelling that one...

scatterthenuns · 12/07/2015 23:49

I grew up in Ramsbottom Grin

TheHouseOnBellSt · 13/07/2015 06:15

I don't think Lawrence would work...it sounds like Lauren Swoof.

Gotta be Wolfgang. Or Woofus.

cocobean2805 · 14/07/2015 03:38

I feel your pain, we will have a similar problem when naming future children. We can't have names with a base in nature or names ending in an 'a'

Sebastian, Frankie, James, ?
Amelia, Lily, Madeline?

Marcipex · 14/07/2015 03:46

Wolfgang would be brilliant Grin

Can you add a 'van' ? ie

Wolfgang van Woof.

I can't think of a girls name combo though. But not Ruth.

scatterthenuns · 14/07/2015 08:45

Wolfgang Van Woof is amazing.

Drunkenly last night, DH suggested Chopper. I might leave him.

BadHenry · 14/07/2015 09:00

Sebastian Woof sounds great IMO.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 14/07/2015 09:44

I'd just say be careful with a 3-4 syllable first name as it is likely to get shortened. I agree Sebastian Woof sounds fine but Seb Woof maybe not.

How about a 2 syllable name that isn't so easily / obviously shortened?
Nathan
Aidan
Leon
Marcus
Rowan
Jared
Ciaran
Xander
Liam
Harry
Isaac

ButterflyOfFreedom · 14/07/2015 09:47

And for the girls:
Lauren
Sophie
Chloe
Martha
Carla
Lydia
Kirsten
Rachel
Jasmine
Molly
Flora
Justine
Anna

CheersMedea · 14/07/2015 10:23

I have to say if you called your child Wolfgang Woof, there is no doubt at all he would become famous. He would probably become a leading actor and win an Oscar.

DoesItReallyMatter · 14/07/2015 12:17

Wolfgang Woof is an amazing name. I love it. Smile

Octavian
Octavius
Otto

An F name would go well.

Finley
Fitzroy
Frederick
Franklin

villainousbroodmare · 14/07/2015 12:48

I think your surname is VERY cool and there are some great suggestions.
Don't leave DH. Anyone who can come up with Chopper is worth keeping.

I know of a family called Kunt.

Doublebubblebubble · 14/07/2015 13:02

There is nothing legally keeping you from not having that as your baby's surname. My daughter doesn't have mine or her dads and my baby boy (28 weeks preggo) isn't going to have it either... Unless of course your dp/family is insistent x good luck x
