Maya?

May-a or My-a (or another way I haven't thought of!)

May-a like my puppy.

verystressedmum · 11/07/2015 01:58

I'd pronounce it My-a. I've seen a Maiya before.

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/07/2015 01:59

My-a.

DD has a name that can be pronounced one of three acceptable ways. Think Bonham-Carter, Christiansen...

It's actually not that big a deal. Yes, there can be some correcting when first introducing, but in regular day-to-day life amongst everyone who knows her, it's pronounced 'correctly'.

You just have to not be precious about it, and accept that people will possibly mispronounce it at first.

ScorpioMermaid · 11/07/2015 02:22

May-a

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 11/07/2015 02:32

Dowager, I can only think of 2 ways of pronouncing your DDs name. Is the third with an ee sound?

Ludways · 11/07/2015 02:38

Seeing it written down I'd say May-a but I panic when I come across May-a, Mee-a, My-a's as they're so alike I never remember which it is. I just avoid calling them anything at all, they usually get sweetheart, love, pet etc. lol

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/07/2015 03:14

Yes, Seth - we grew up with an elderly friend who pronounced it that way - accent on the second syllable, and an 'ee' sound.

NadiaWadia · 11/07/2015 03:35

Maya rhymes with fire. That's the correct way to pronounce it AFAIK and also the most usual way, going by this thread.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 11/07/2015 03:40

Well I would have pronounced it Maya until I was made aware of , now I'd pronounce it Mya.

TheRachel · 11/07/2015 03:48

My-a definitely

TRexingInAsda · 11/07/2015 04:24

My-a. I think Maia looks much more like may-a so I'd go with the spelling in the OP. It's a nice name.

CakeRattleandRoll · 11/07/2015 06:40

My-a. Agree that Maia looks more like May-a

Appleblossom82 · 11/07/2015 06:54

My-a

patienceisvirtuous · 11/07/2015 06:56

Just spell it Mya?

As my friend did. No confusion.

Whipnaenae · 11/07/2015 07:03

How is it possibly May-a? Like Mayor? Really?

reuset · 11/07/2015 10:28

I thought this was an 'old' thread as we've just discussed this! May-a and My-a both correct and used in England. Elsewhere My-a probably more common. I use My-a, personally, but May-a still fine in Eng.

Sophronia · 11/07/2015 11:02

My-a

Ludways · 11/07/2015 12:18

It's not a leap to understand that may with an a at the end will be pronounced as may-a by some people, especially when they've heard the name may-a spoken.

I say mayor as mare anyway, lol

AmysTiara · 11/07/2015 12:19

Maya

surroundedbyblondes · 11/07/2015 12:23

My-a

reuset · 11/07/2015 16:57

I say mayor as mare anyway, lol

It is more like 'mare' especially if you're British Grin

qumquat · 12/07/2015 09:30

My-a. I teach at a girls school and it's a popular name with about 50-50 May-a/My-a. I personally think May-a is just a mispronunciation, but it's definitely accepted as a name now. I think spell it Maya if you want to, some people might need correcting once but that's all. Calling your dd Mya is just giving in to the people who pronounce the name wrong IMHO!

EmmaWoodlouse · 13/07/2015 19:03

I'd say My-a.

AlfAlf · 13/07/2015 19:09

My-a

WordOfTheDay · 13/07/2015 20:05

My-a
