How many Eva's do you know?

So after many months of debate DH and I have got a shortlist for DD due in 3 weeks. Eva is top of the list but we have been warned off it due to popularity. We never wanted a top 10 name and on last ONS stats it was 26.

So it would be great to get a feel for how popular it really is now. How many do you know, what age are they and what area do you live in?

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/combined-spellings-2013-girls.html is useful for its overview of combined spellings for popular names.

Ava is already top ten; Evie and Eva will, I suspect, increase in popularity in this year's statistics. If it's really important to you to avoid a top ten name then I think you need to find something else.

I am in Ireland and it is extremely popular. Like another poster, I hear mothers calling their daughters Eve, Eva, Ava etc all the time when out and about. I actually always think that it's the most popular name I have heard recently, even though it's not at the top of the statistics list just yet.

Personally, I know 6 of various spellings (as above).

Eve, Evie, Eva and Ava are all the same name really, so easily top ten if not in first place. I personally know three baby Evies, one is really Eva and I think one is Evelyn. All called Evie though, so it amounts to the same thing. This is in one village.

I don't know any Evas.

But I know two Eves, two Avas, two Evies and an Evelyn, so as others have pointed out, the cumulative effect is a popular name!

Just one Eva, my dd born in 2008, we've not met another one yet or an Ava or Evie either for that matter. I'm in the sw. I think if you love the name then you should go for it. For what it's worth, both my sons have 'popular' names as well according to the stats but we've never met another of their names either!

I know 4 Evas between 0-6.

But the number is much much higher when I add all the Evies, Eves and Avas on - all of those names blur into one. When all are taken into account, I know around 15 girls with those very similar names. It's the equivalent of calling your daughter Claire or Sarah in the early 80s.

The thing with the names Ava, Evie and Eva is that they all sound the same to me Blush.

I avoid calling any of the girls with these names by their actual names, as I'm sure I'd get them mixed up.

In all I know about 6/7 girls with these names. I genuinely can't tell you how many of each, for reasons explained above.

2 out of those three are of Chinese descent. Don't know if it's particularly popular among Chinese or if it's just a coincidence.

Despite how popular I'm told it is, don't even know of any. Know 1 Ava and 1 Evie

Lost count as there's so many. Also know lots of Ava's and there was a time I thought Evie was the compulsory name for new DDs in our town. I'm in the NW.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

Three Evas including my DD. One is 6 and the other two are 3. I'm in south west London.

I don't know any Avas, or any Evies and only one Evelyn who is in her 50s. I know one Aoife.

I keep hearing that there are Evas, Avas and Evies EVERYWHERE and my Eva will be in a class of many, but I have no idea where they are all hiding!

  1. One is 7 and one is 6. Hertfordshire and Surrey.

When the 7 year old was named (in 2008), it was 41st most popular girls' name, between Brooke and Elizabeth. And it's just kept creeping up the table! Angry. DD2's name was at 486th the year she was born Grin...

Hm, my unpopular DD2's name has climbed to 358th now, having been at 486th when she was born..I am clearly a trend setter!

Go for a name you love, even if it's first in the tables!

Evas, Avas, Evies and the like are everywhere. I know:

Eva x 3 (all with different pronunciations)
Evie x 2
Ava x 2
Aoife x 1
Evie-Grace x 1

These are all under the age of eight with the majority being toddlers or babies.
