You seem very invested in this, RedToothBrush! The OP asked for opinions. I'm sure that most people on this thread are not miserable fuckers just because they have different tastes in names for their children.

Na, I just find name snobbery pretty dull and think it needs challenging.

Its funny how parents who think of something different are blamed for the prejudices of those who do the judging. The problem lies with those who are doing the judging, not those who want to be free to make different choices from other people because they have different taste.

Its like bullying the child who wears slightly different clothes into wearing the same fashion as everyone else.

hawkmcqueen · 06/07/2015 14:15

I don't think it's pretentious. I used to be a huge Hendrix fan so if I met a child called Hendrix it would have positive connotations for me and I would think it was nice to name your child after something you are passionate about.

MamaLazarou · 06/07/2015 17:12

I don't have a problem with unusual names: my son's name is very uncommon. I just think that giving your kid a 'rock star' name looks like you're trying to bestow instant coolness onto them (if someone who died choking on drug-induced vomit is your idea of cool). It's a bit sad and wanky, IMO.

How about Henrik or Kendrick?

MamaLazarou · 06/07/2015 17:16

"If it's about having your own identity why call your son Oliver then?"

Grin You must be getting me mixed up with someone else. Hahah! That really made me laugh Grin

downgraded · 06/07/2015 17:18

It's a bit try hard.

However, if you like it use it. Once the baby is here he'll make the name his own.

CoogerAndDark · 06/07/2015 17:30

It's no more 'try hard' than using a Biblical name I.e not very.

I would probably go for Hendrick over the X spelling, but that's just personal preference.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/07/2015 18:04

I love it! Gets a yes vote from me, prefer it to the Charlie, Harry, Alfie, Noahs I keep hearing.

Use it OP, even if people don't like it they'll never say it to your face and frankly once the baby arrives and you introduce him, Hendrix will cease to be a "try hard name" and will just be the name of your baby.

And if people are rude to you tell them to go fuck themselves Grin

Hellolemonade · 06/07/2015 19:45

I went to school with an Elvis. In the nicest possible way he could not live up to that name :(

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 06/07/2015 19:55

Makes me think of the gin (Hendricks).

TattieHowkerz · 10/07/2015 06:11

At the risk of poking the beast...

I'm not keen. If it is the sound you like, I prefer Hendrick or Henrik. Hendrix reminds of when I was at school and kids would talk about what their ever so cool future kids would be called, the boys came up with Dylan, Hendrix, Axl and Kiedis. We were 14. It was the 90s.

The good thing about the baby names topic is that you will hear what people really think, not just the polite responses you will likely get in real life.

Nousername2015 · 16/07/2015 07:02

I'm with you OP, if you like it then use it. I love the name Floyd for a boy (dh rrally doesn't), not after the band though I just heard someone on the radio say it was their sons name and its stuck with me ever since. I know if (by some miracle) we do use it people will think it is after the band but to be honest I really don't give a stuff! I work with a few Hendricks though, all dutch or belgian, and they are all lovely and a nice range of young to old so if you are worried about what people may say (not that you should), then Hendrick may be a good middle ground.

ElectricDaisies · 16/07/2015 09:31

See, I didn't think of Pink Floyd at all. Floyd to me conjures up black sportsmen, especially boxers (Patterson, Mayweather)

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 16/07/2015 09:47

I really like it but dh hates it

Could you shout it in a park and does it go with your surname
Could you put up with people always adding "after jimi"when you said his name?
If the answer is yes to those questions go for it.

goldenhen · 16/07/2015 17:22

There is a darts player called Jimmy Hendriks who claims to have never heard the music of Jimi Hendrix.

I think rock and roll names are a bit like when parents give their little girls "sexy" names like Lolita or whatever, it says more about the insecurity of the parents.

I fucking love it.

It's a gorgeous name for a boy.

Ignore everyone else on this thread and listen to me Grin

Lilydreams · 17/07/2015 13:20

Please use it!! I love it but it got whittled off our shortlist- DH cares more about what other people think whereas I couldn't give a fuck but ultimately he had it removed!

I got similar comments when I put it on a thread on here with my other options- the whole 'try hard' comment really gets me as I couldn't probably name you a single Jimi Hendrix song if my life depended on it and so it was in no way me trying to be cool etc- surely people are allowed to like a name without it having to be after someone etc!!? Someone said something about an album name with a sexual reference in it and said all his friends in high school would tease him asking him the question- something like 'are you experienced' but I can't quite remember- I found that hilarious as if I had never heard of it at 28 chances are in another 15 years the kids in his class at school wouldn't have either and certainly wouldn't use it for bullying imo!!

Use it if YOU like it op I think there are much more prentetuous names out there that are suggested on MN- Barnaby, Atticus anyone? Hmm
