Do you like the name Ianthe?

We are about to have a third daughter. Our first two are Cecily and Emmeline. Having a bit of trouble picking a name for this one! Currently Ianthe is in the lead. What do you think? Others we like include Daisy and Romilly. Any views or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks very much!

It sounds really contrived and pretentious.

Romily is lovely.

Ianthe or Romilly. Daisy is a different beast altogether.
Bit like Rupert, Horace and Dwayne.

HaleMary · 02/07/2015 08:32

Much the nicest of your possibles. Romilly and Cecily together sound too wobbly, and Daisy reminds me of an Edwardian housemaid.

florascotia · 02/07/2015 11:54

I like Ianthe, and also Iolanthe.

Daisy does seem rather twee; much prefer Romola to Romilly.

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/07/2015 12:06

I love Ianthe (I'm surprised that some people haven't heard of it before) but not keen on Romilly (probably because I'm not keen on Esmond Romilly)
Daisy's nice, but much more common of course. Your other two daughters have excellent names! Smile

Go for it.

And if you don't, at least scrap Daisy from your shortlist :p

Know a Greek Ianthe
Great name

barbecue · 02/07/2015 16:32

Ianthe is a pretty and unusual name with a lovely meaning (violet flower).

ashesandfire · 02/07/2015 16:42

Not keen. Love Romilly.
Really like Xanthe, or Ione /Iona?
Cecily, Emmeline and Adelaide /Beatrix /Imogen/Tabitha/Matilda/ Meredith / Penelope /Rosalind /Alice

Lunastarfish · 02/07/2015 18:15

i love all 3 names - not much help

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 02/07/2015 18:39

I like it, and think it goes well with your other names.

Other names that might work: Ariadne, Hebe, Helena, Iris, Penelope.

lljkk · 02/07/2015 19:09

I don't like names with lots of vowel sounds & little else.

or that have spellings that don't really tell me what to say.
So not for me.
Nevertheless, If I met one, I'd get used to it.

okavango · 02/07/2015 19:18

How about Ione?

Lizzie1832 · 02/07/2015 22:29

Thanks so much for sharing your views and for your suggestions. I really appreciate it. Am going to discuss with DH now! Fingers crossed we will actually decide on one now.

Prefer Xanthe said Zanthee

Esmesgirls · 03/07/2015 14:55

Ianthe is stunning! Daisy is a bit twee compared with the others, which are beautiful. I like Romilly as well. You could think about Iona? Others that would go well would maybe be Harriet, Seren(a), Lucinda?

Dreya · 04/07/2015 19:29

Your other dds names are lovely. Ianthe isn't anywhere near as nice. Usually I don't think a name should have to go with siblings names. However it just sounds so wrong with Cecily and Emmeline.

Lambbone · 04/07/2015 19:35

What about Idonea? I knew a girl with the name at uni, many years ago, and she's the only one I've ever met. Lovely name.

Mrsrsw · 05/07/2015 22:31

It's on our list Smile

Ikeameatballs · 05/07/2015 22:33

I love it. Know one from uni.

RiverTam · 05/07/2015 22:35

I like all three. Which isn't very helpful of me Smile.

I really like Ianthe and considered it myself - although it is very uncommon and you would probably end up having to spell/pronounce it all the time. Not necessarily an issue though. Your other girls' names are lovely - for some reason I thought Cecily, Emmeline and Agatha - a Victorian literary vibe. Similarly Isabel and Violet. Good luck!
