What do you think of this?

Our baby will be mixed Indian and British, and will have my husband's Indian surname. He is keen that the baby doesn't have a typically Indian first name, since the surname is already. The thing is that I really love Indian names, so I'm trying to come up with ideas that will keep us both happy.

What do you think of the name Maya? My main reservation is that it might lead to confusion about pronounciation. I think it is meant to be pronounced MY-a, but wonder if people might say MAY-a. I guess we could spell it Mya, but that's not the Indian/Sanskrit spelling.

Maybe I'm over-thinking!!! Any other nice name ideas?

Thanks!

I like the name and would pronounce Maya as MY-a too.

mappemonde · 29/06/2015 17:33

I read that as May-a, which I think is pretty but think if you feel strongly about pronunciation you may have to spell differently

MamaLazarou · 29/06/2015 17:38

Just a warning: Maya is very, very popular at the moment. I know of four born in the last year.

I don't think anyone will struggle to pronounce it.

MamaLazarou · 29/06/2015 17:40

How about Mahiya?

NadiaWadia · 29/06/2015 17:45

It is supposed to be pronounced My-a, like you said. Lovely name.

Sleepybeanbump · 29/06/2015 17:46

Is Maya popular now? I thought it was Mia that was everywhere.

Op I think it's a lovely name and good idea. I think I've only ever heard it pronounced MY-a.

Thanks all! I also like Anya, but worried she would get nicknamed Lasagna!

Maya and Anya both lovely

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 29/06/2015 20:02

Very pretty name but., one rule with names is spell it how you want it pronounced or you/she will be forever correcting people, so. If you want it pronounced Mya, spell it that way.

GinUpGirl · 29/06/2015 20:06

Maya is Mya, Mia is mee-ah.

I think it is gorgeous. The only Anya I know is Russian, and uses it as a less formal version of Anna.

MadameJosephine · 29/06/2015 20:07

Both gorgeous names, I prefer Maya out of the two though.

How about Amna? I know a lovely Indian lady named Amna and I've always loved it

Stoneysilence · 29/06/2015 20:21

Both Maya and Anya are beautiful ancient goddess type names. Mya would remind me of the cosmetic surgery brand, sorry.

Have you thought about Martha or Zara?

Sophronia · 29/06/2015 20:27

Maya is nice, but it is getting quite popular I think, it was #51 in 2013 and I wouldn't be surprised if it ranked higher now.

Other suggestions...

Asha
Arya
Jaya
Lila/Leela
Lina
Mira
Priya
Mina
Nikita
Nila/Neela

I know a May-a in her 30's, I thought Maia was Mya?

MamaLazarou · 29/06/2015 20:51

Anya is lovely. How about Ayla?

pickleandflux · 29/06/2015 21:07

Lots of fab ideas! Now just need to persuade DH!

My Indian/English friend has a gorgeous little Anya. She has been nicknamed all sorts of cute things but I have never heard Lasagna! Wouldn't have occurred to me so you may be overthinking that one Smile

SanityClause · 29/06/2015 21:14

I would pronounce Maya, Muh-Yuh, but that's a European pronunciation.

I like Nishika, Kavika, Namita, Sarita and Anushka.

manicinsomniac · 29/06/2015 23:05

I really like Maya (whether it's pronounced Maia or Maya) and Anya.

As alternatives how about Mala, Lana or Farrah?

Sisterjacqueline · 30/06/2015 18:06

I love maya, Mia, Mya.

Also anya is nice and, as is Amaya.

pickleandflux · 30/06/2015 18:51

Seems like an unusually high level of agreement that they are nice names! Now we just need to choose Smile

Maya (correct pronunciation Mya, no need to misspell it Hmm) is a lovely name.

What about Layla?

ThursdayLast · 30/06/2015 18:56

I actually know a little girl called Maya, pronounced My-a who has an English mother and Indian father!

It works perfectly for her Smile

postitnotes · 30/06/2015 19:10

My Indian friend called her daughter Aniya. My sister is Ania but we're Polish descent.
I know an Indian Lata, which is a lovely name.
