Thoughts please.

This is the only name we have both agreed on so far!

DH likes: Atticus, Horatio

I like: Solomon, Gideon, Percival.

Middle name will be John for family reasons.

What do you think?

I like it, but it is poncetastic.

I LONGED to have a son called Lysander. I'd have had another called Hector too -- I learned the British Grenadiers as a child. I also like Atticus and Horatio, but not the others. John/Johnny are cool too though.

GladysTheGolem · 23/06/2015 21:44

Percival is my favourite.
All of this (bar Atticus) were on my long list before DH got involved!

Lysander is very poncy (said the woman who wanted one of hers to be called Rafferty)!

Zakken · 23/06/2015 21:48

Why Xander? Where has that X come from?

If that's what you want, what's wrong with Alexander?

UnspecialSnowflake · 23/06/2015 21:49

Alexander would give you the nicknames Sandy and Xander but minus the ponce factor.

CotedePablo · 23/06/2015 21:54

It depends on your place on the social scale. If you live in a tower block where there's tons of single mums (no offence to single mums of course) with 12 children each with different fathers, it wouldn't work. However, if you happen to have your own 48 room mansion, and Wills and Kate were at your wedding, then Lysander will probably work, as will the other names.

MamaLazarou · 23/06/2015 21:55

Solomon is lovely.

If you like Shakespeare go with Don John! Especially if you are not married to your child's father!

lunar1 · 23/06/2015 22:01

I like John!

TempsPerdu · 23/06/2015 22:03

I love Atticus. Solomon/Sol is OK, if a bit...solemn. The rest are just a bit much, even for me (and I love unusual names!)

Never met a Lysander, but I do know a Leander. He hates it and goes by Leo. Smile

crje · 23/06/2015 22:07

porn star name

John is the best of the names

Takver · 23/06/2015 22:11

The funny thing is, the only boy I knew at school who got relentlessly teased about his name was called . . . . John.

(Got a rubber, Johnny? repeat ad nauseum)

Melfish · 23/06/2015 22:12

DD (7) has been been reading a version of Midsummer night's dream at school and referred to Lysander as 'Lasagne' throughout.

toobreathless · 23/06/2015 22:16

Not overly concerned about potential ponceyness ' I suspect it will work for our circumstances. I feel that the nicknames give potential if he feels it's a bit 'much' he can just be 'Sandy' which isn't poncey at all.

snowflake DH really wants a more unusual name, I suggested Alexander but I have a niece Alexandria nm Alex. We did consider Alexander with Xander as a nm but I wondered if 'Alex' might be inevitable? Then my parents will essentially have two grandchildren with the same name.

I like Solomon the best of your names.

Atticus is becoming pretty common - and I don't like it I must say, especially as so many people don't realise it's context outside of TKAM.

Gideon makes me think of bibles given out at school.

Percival is VERY poncey! As is Lysander!

toobreathless · 23/06/2015 22:19

the poor kid's gonna get 7 types of shit beaten out of him at school

Grin

Does this not depend on the school?

I can't get over the 'lice' thing and that to me would be the most obvious shortening - don't forget, it won't neccessarily be you who chooses the child's nickname.

Xander is pushing it a bit - as it isn't a 'z' sound. Sandy is cute though.

I like Solomon. Gideon makes me think of the bible. I like Atticus too, in theory but not sure how I'd like it in practice...

I like the name Hecate. But I think it's a girls name. And a witch. Think she got a mention in Macbeth.

ClashCityRocker · 23/06/2015 22:22

I like Romulus. There's a good poncy name.

Takver · 23/06/2015 22:25

TBH if you went for Alexander and used Xander from day one, I'd be surprised if it mutated into Alex. Xan maybe, as kids do tend to shorten more and more, but not something completely different.

DD has a name that has many potential shortenings We've always called her by one short version, and no-one's ever used any of the others, though it does get contracted (Not Elizabeth, but imagine Libby turning into Libs - but never changing to Beth or Eliza)

Devora · 23/06/2015 22:31

I really like Solomon and I quite like Gideon.

Lysander, not so much.

SoupDragon · 23/06/2015 22:34

Poncey beyond belief. I wouldn't do that to my child.
