We love Harrison but not Harry. Partner thinks he will be called Harry by friends etc

Any experience ? Views?

Yes know two

One is 'H'
Other is Harry

UniS · 17/06/2015 21:17

Yep, the instant he starts school he will be called harry. Or hari , or ari, or maybe just H.

Earthbound · 17/06/2015 21:18

The Harrison I know is always called Harrison. There is always the possibility that it will be shortened later by friends etc though. I personally wouldn't choose a name if you hate the obvious nickname.

Lottiedaydreambeliever2014 · 17/06/2015 21:28

I know two, both at school, both still called Harrison.

Hamsolo · 17/06/2015 22:22

It'd be Hal round here I think

AssembleTheMinions · 17/06/2015 22:27

I only know of one Harrison and he is known as Harrison. He's 15 now and has avoided nicknames.

noblegiraffe · 17/06/2015 22:28

I know 3. Two are happy to be Harry/Harri, the other isn't, so people call him Harrison.

halfwayupthehill · 17/06/2015 22:29

I know one

PerfectlyPosed · 17/06/2015 22:33

I know a Harrison and his name isn't shortened apart from by the younger kids that can only say Harry. His mum was quite adamant that Harrison was his name and not to be shortened.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 18/06/2015 00:37

Well not when he's little ad you can insist that he must be called Harrison, but it's if you get fed up of the sound of your own voice saying. It's Harrison, not Harry.
Also fast farward 20 years in the future or even when he starts school. What are going to do if he says I want to be known as Harry or H. You can't stop him. It'll be his name not yours, and everyone is entitled to a name and a preferred name. It says so in the ECHR

Florrieboo · 18/06/2015 02:56

Yes, there are 2 in my boys class and both are called Harrison religiously by their mum's but, Harry by all their friends.

FastWindow · 18/06/2015 03:20

How about Williamson? Just as clunky.

Unless you are deliberately aiming for a 'name sounds like a surname like at public school' I wouldn't :)

00100001 · 18/06/2015 12:24

I know a Crispin whose parents get mightily pissed when he gets called Chris.

What did they expect?

HemlockStarglimmer · 18/06/2015 12:52

My name was never shortened when I was a child. Family knew not to and other people soon stopped because I didn't respond. Not being rude but not knowing they were talking to me as they weren't using my name.

The Harrison I know was shortened to Harri but now he is nearly four he insists on the full name.

Of course being the contrary person I am, I have gone by a shortened version of my name since my twenties.

mrspremise · 18/06/2015 20:56

I know a Harrison (teenage).Everyone (even teachers!) calls him 'Ford', and have done since he was tiny. I INC, his uncle started it and it just stuck Grin

cqssjoyful · 20/06/2015 21:47

I'm in the same boat as you. Like the name Harrison bit so keen on Harry. I was thinking it'd be cute to call him Sonny or just son, when he's little but I can't help thinking of Sonny & Cher.

cqssjoyful · 20/06/2015 21:47

'but not so keen on'

2boys2girls · 20/06/2015 21:49

Know a few Harrison's and all go by their full name

CrispyFern · 20/06/2015 21:55

I know two Harrisons and they are both Harrison.
Funny, I never thought of them being potential Harrys.

manicinsomniac · 21/06/2015 00:02

I know two. One is Harri and the other Harrison. I don't think the shortening is inevitable at all. Harrison is only 3 syllables!

Queenofknickers · 21/06/2015 00:19

I know a teenage Harrison and his name is never shortened.

Madbengalmum · 21/06/2015 16:24

Harry is a classic name, i think Harrison is a bit chavvy, sorry

EmmaWoodlouse · 22/06/2015 20:38

You (and he) are entitled to insist that you don't want his name shortened. Personally I would only do this if the child agreed - it's his name after all.

I have definitely met at least one little boy who was always known as Harrison.
