But I was totally wrong.

We were visiting family recently. Took dcs to play in their local park.

Lady was calling her boy "ynys" (inn-iss) which I thought was sweet and unusual.

Turns out he is called "innes", and is honestly named from John innes compost...

Oops.

I like the name, but not the meaning.

Innes can be a Scottish boy's name, if that makes it any better? Grin I went to school with one.

I am glad it is a real name!
I think there is a welsh version too.

But to name your child after compost??

Ynys is a Welsh word, it means mountain
Ynyr is a Welsh boys name
Never heard of innes apart from the Ines Spanish ?

Allalonenow · 09/06/2015 01:01

Innes Ireland, famous racing driver.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/06/2015 01:06

Weird to name him after compost, yes! Grin

MrsBennetsEldest · 09/06/2015 08:29

Ynys is not Welsh for mountain, it is Welsh for Island. Mynydd is mountain.

Highlandbird · 09/06/2015 08:30

Ynys is island in welsh.....Innes is a fairly common Scottish name, I know at least 3 of them!

JakeyBurd · 09/06/2015 09:33

But you do realise Innes doesn't actually mean compost, right? It's from the same Gaelic root as Angus, and means 'unique choice'.

I mean, I've seen 'Dennis' on the front of a fire engine, but if it inspired me to name my son Dennis, it wouldn't change the meaning to fire engine! Grin

Postchildrenpregranny · 09/06/2015 09:37

Ynys is definitely Welsh for island not mountain .Born and raised in Wales and Welsh speaking but have never known a child called Ynys.!

frosch · 09/06/2015 09:37

Ynys is Welsh for island. It's pronounced 'Uh-nis'.

ScrambledSmegs · 09/06/2015 09:40

She must really like compost.

sleepyhead · 09/06/2015 09:41

Innes is a fairly popular scottish name - I love it Smile.

Are you sure she didn't say "Innes, as in John Innes" because she didn't think you'd have heard of the name? Hmm

mojo17 · 09/06/2015 09:55

Oops sorry yes ynys is island
Have no idea why I said otherwise

longlistofexlovers · 09/06/2015 09:55

I really like the name Innes. Don't see why you think it is weird tbh.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/06/2015 11:52

I know a few guys called Innes.

florascotia · 09/06/2015 17:48

As others have said, Innes is a well-known Scottish name, related to Angus.

It is also a surname, taken from a Scottish placename: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Innes

John Innes - of compst fame - was a remarkable man: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Innes_%28philanthropist%29

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/06/2015 23:35

I never said the name was weird.
I like the name. I assumed it was welsh, but see it is scots as well as welsh.
The only thing I found strange was the fact she named him after compost. As she is a gardener. She didn't know it was a scots name!

There is also a Spanish name, Inez.

slightlyeggstained · 10/06/2015 00:08

Good job he didn't up as a little "Manure" or "Multi Purpose" then, if it really was after the compost.
