Long version vs shortened

Dp and I both like Ronnie for a boy, but I like names which can be shortened, so I'd like Ronald (grandads name) but use Ronnie day to day iyswim, but everyone is saying just to name baby ( if its a boy) Ronnie because Ronald is "old manish", what do you think??

Ronald. Ronnie is sweet for a baby, but the full name gives more options as your son grows up.

Thank you for replies, I agree Ronald gives more choice, now we need to agree on a middle name Ds1 has my dads name as his middle name, so I've told dp he can choose this time,. He's piped up with Alan. I hate it, but its only a middle name, should I just suck it up and agree?

I like both Ronald and Ronnie. 2 of my DCs have long 'official' names but are always known as the shortened version. Never been an issue.

Does Alan have any special meaning for your DH? If it's a family name then I think you'll have to suck it up. But if he just likes it perhaps there is room for compromise.

Also, do be careful with middle names started with vowels as the initials often end up spelling something and you don't want your kid saddled with the initials RAT or something.

I favour full names because they allow more flexibility; alternative nicknames, option to use full name when wished, option to use nickname if wished. I know someone who has named their children 'short' names, and now the kids are in their teens they hate their names as there is absolutely nothing they can do to them.

Dd full name has literally never been used but we wanted her full name on birth cert.

My dsis reluctantly put my dn's full name on his birth certificate. But dsis waS adamant tHAt he is to be known as the abbreviated version. She goes blardy mad if someone anyone uses his full name. Hence the reason why didn't want the full name on there.

Full name. Parents should consider what is best for the child not just what they like themselves. Full name gives the child options later.

You might have to go with Alan as mn, although I would tell your DH how you feel and ask if he has any other names he likes.

Alan was one of his late grandfathers names, the only other name he's suggested so far was Phillip (his df) but I like that even less. I was beginning to think I was being totally unreasonable considering Ronald, with so many people slating it. I like it, I like that there are options and that that it has a family link, decision made, thank you all

We gave our DD a long name but more regularly called her the shortening which suited her more as a baby.

However, when starting preschool she asked for the teachers to call her by the long name. I'm so glad we have given her the option, especially as now she is getting older the long name really suits her.

Having said that, make sure you like both. Don't call give baby a long name that you hate!

Prefer Ronald. Though you could have something like Ronan, for a 'ron' name, though not sure I like that much

I would probably suck up which ever name your DH preferred as a middle name if you got your first choice last time.

FWIW I know you really don't like it but I think Ronald Philip sounds much better than Ronald Alan.
