Help! Male sibling for Blake

Hello!

Suggestions desperately needed for our little boy due in August. So far we're not doing very well and despite trawling through message boards and lists we're not getting very far! Bit of a challenge as both my husband and I are a bit fussy! We already have a little boy called Blake which we liked because it was different but not out there... So here goes with rules!

1: we like unusual but not too weird, we like Taliesin but feel it's too different.
2: we don't want a name that can be shortened to something too dull, for example we like alaric but don't like al or rik.
3: we aren't Irish but have a very typical Irish surname so anything too Irish/Scottish sounds very odd for an English/Gibraltar household like ours.
4: nothing starting in gar for very personal reasons. I know a Gary who has caused a lot of pain.
5: the only names we sort of like are Owen (maybe owynn), mylo (too tweenies?) And Darwyn (hubby not sure).

Help us! Really stumped on name's, I know there are lots of rules so desperate for help!

Thanks in advance!

Darwin is nice (why the odd spelling?).

How about Julius, Ambrose, Magnus, Angelo, Pascal?

Owen, Milo and Darwin are fine, but I'd stick to the normal spellings.

You can't control nicknames. Alaric (also fine) could be Ali or Ala (both are used as short forms of Alasdair in Scotland) or Alar or Alic. Or it could end up as something completely unrelated to the name, such as 'Tiger' or 'Curly'....

Piers

Munro

Morgan

Fraser

Thanks for the suggestions, we like traditional and believe it or now Darwin with a y is the original spelling so we thought about that. Similar with Milo, can be either way. We're just playing with options really. I like Roman, hadn't thought of that, also Taran, I'll have to see what hubby thinks when he gets home from work.

Keep suggesting though, I suspect he'll be worse than me!

Sorry - absolutely, genuinely no offence meant, but I don't believe it re the spelling of Darwin.
The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon 'Deorwine', and means 'dear friend' - which is lovely.

Later, over the centuries, the surname might or might not have been spelled with a y - for a great many years, the two were often interchangable until spelling was formalised by mass-produced dictionaries.

I agree with florascotia. Spelling was not fixed until relatively recent times, and up until then names were spelled in multiple different ways. Look how many different spellings of Shakespeare were recorded, all referring to the same person. There was no such thing as an "original" or "correct" spelling.

Given that you like Owen, Darwyn, Taliesin and Roman, I'm going to suggest some more which have the "in/un" sound at the end, which seems to be what you are drawn to:

Lincoln
Rowan / Rohan
Lorcan
Logan
Mason
Quentin
Saxon
Peyton
Nolan
Simeon
Damian
Gideon
Brooklyn
Reuben
Florian

My instant thought on seeing your thread title was Robin.

I think that given you've got a Blake, you should stick with the literary theme, so Osian or Milton would be perfect. Erasmus is also nice and goes with the theme (gets shortened to 'Rasmus' in my experience, which I also like).

I know one little Blake - his brother is called Flint!

Or what about Flynn? That's pretty cool with Blake
Leon also springs to mind

Or Saul?
