Eliza

Littlefish · 29/05/2015 22:44

How do you pronounce it?

The one with the y in it looks very odd.

Shinyandnew1 · 29/05/2015 22:46

Neither- you'll be spelling their name out loud forever! Eliza is beautiful though.

ButterflyHearts · 29/05/2015 22:49

I've had Eliza as my favourite name from day one, partner is against it as it's becoming too common hence me wanting to change it up a little bit.

I have a child who spells their name Alyssa but pronounces it 'Eliza'. Apparently it's everybody else's fault they don't pronounce it correctly!

Honestly, if you don't want issues with pronunciation I'd go for Eliza rather than either of your options.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/05/2015 22:54

I'd stick with Eliza

PotOfYoghurt · 29/05/2015 22:57

There will most likely be people who would think your alternate spellings are more common than Eliza.

CordeliaFrost · 29/05/2015 23:02

Aliza is actually a legitimate name, completely separate from Eliza. It is Hebrew, means 'joyful' and is pronounced ah-LEE-zah.

My husband and I are culturally Jewish and are actually considering Aliza for our second child.

If you're going to use Aliza, and pronounce it properly (as above), then go for it safe in the knowledge it is a real name.

However, if you're just trying to get creative with Eliza, then don't bother. Regardless of how you spell it, if you used Aliza with the intention of pronouncing it as Eliza, then your daughter would still be called Eliza. She would still have a popular (I prefer that term to 'common') name, just with an awkward spelling.

Spelling a popular name differently never makes sense to me, because when the name is spoken, they're still just another aren't they?

Littlefish · 29/05/2015 23:11

I agree with Cordelia.

cece · 29/05/2015 23:15

I agree with Cordelia. If you like Eliza then use that but don't use it but spell it all wrong and then expect people to pronounce it Eliza. FWIWN I don't know any Elizas.

Sophronia · 29/05/2015 23:20

Neither. I like Eliza.

Aranan · 29/05/2015 23:21

Eliza is a lovely name (as too Aliza as pronounced above actually, had not ever heard of that.)

Eliza spelt Aliza or Alyza will constantly cart with her the annoyance of spelling her name constantly and the judgement that people thi j her parents are try hards or a bit thick. Sorry.

Stick with the perfectly lovely Eliza!

ButterflyHearts · 29/05/2015 23:31

Eliza it is :) now to convince the other half.

Eliza isn't common unless your DH is a cockney getting married in the morning Wink

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/05/2015 19:01

But if you spell it with the A, you change the whole dynamics of the name. It becomes Aliza not Eliza, two different names

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/05/2015 19:02

Sorry butterfly didn't see the update
