Toby and Theo are crazily popular!

Every other baby/toddler I meet has one of the above names!
Why have they suddenly become so popular? Where did they come from?
Is there a celeb/Eastenders connection I'm missing?

Just out of interest really!

Only know one toddler Toby and a yet unborn Theo....pondering Theo for our DS2.

However, every single girl is called Isabelle/Isobel/Isabella/Bella!

We have a Toby, there are no others in his class, I don't even think we've met another at stay and play type sessions.

We know a clouple of Theos, it's a lovely name, I'm not surprised it's so popular,

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/05/2015 20:17

My Toby is 17. I chose it because its simple, traditional - you hear of them up to aged 100 - yet not popular. I really don't want it to be popular.....

DepecheNO · 30/05/2015 21:13

I know a Theo (4) and a Toby (21), but I have got the picture that Theo is recently popular from other naming discussions.

Yes, Toby and Theo are definitely trending here. I met three Tobys at a toddler group t'other day.

Funnily enough, I only know one Oscar.

I think Theo might be popular because of the book The Goldfinch?

There was a Toby on the Cheerios packet for a while - may sound silly but I think that kind of thing puts a name into the public awareness...it brings it to people's attention.

akorda · 02/06/2015 14:39

Yes, loads round here! Also lots of Ethans!

haleandhearty · 17/06/2015 11:26

Yes, both names definitely trending at the moment.

On the girls' front, I keep on hearing of more and more Connies! Such a lovely name though..

Yes, there are quite a few Theos among my friends'/cousins'/colleagues' children. I wonder why it suddenly got so popular? Maybe the book The Goldfinch?

And several Tobys too. Again, why? For me it has rather negative associations of a red-faced Tory type with mustard yellow trousers and a penchant for too much alcohol

Reuben/Leo also seem surprisingly well -represented

EmmaWoodlouse · 15/07/2015 15:55

I found this funny because I actually know two boys called Toby and Theo who are friends, aged about 10, and they are quite popular! I don't know any smaller children or babies with either name, though. I can more easily imagine someone naming a baby Theo right now than Toby for some reason (I do know a 1-year-old Theodore, but they call him Teddy.)

VenusVanDamme · 15/07/2015 16:30

I don't know a single Toby or Theo (apart from a dog) but lots of Ollies, Oscars and Noahs here.

bobajob · 16/07/2015 09:07

I know two Theos and one Tobias. Also know lots of Olivers and Louis, and at least one each of Alfie, Harry, Oscar, Max and Noah.

AmysTiara · 16/07/2015 09:13

I don't know any Toby's. Theo is very popular and there's loads of boys called Oscar and Harry.

Every girl seems to be called Ella, Evie or Isabella.

Whereisegg · 16/07/2015 10:36

Ds is Tobias/Toby. He's 8 and the only one we know.

5madthings · 16/07/2015 10:45

I have a theo(Dore) and an Oscar, thru are almost 16 and 13 and always been the only ones in their school year, I know a theo of toddler age and other Oscars but under 6 yrs. We were clearly ahead of the trend.

I know a few toys as well, but although popular they are not over done names iykwim, they are classic.

I know a three year old Connie but only the one.

whereisegg I know a seven year old tobias, it's a lovely name :)

5madthings · 16/07/2015 10:47

They are...

And tobys not toys..

Whereisegg · 16/07/2015 11:20

I agree 5 and the whole three syllable thing is excellent when you are cross Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/07/2015 11:33

Ted.

Everywhere I go people are pregnant with boys called Ted or have just given birth to a Ted.

So odd that such a dull name has become so super duper popular so suddenly.
