What do you think of this as a name? Came across a little one yesterday and thought "What a great name!" .Under-used and several nice shortenings: Berty/Bert/Gil

I really can't stand it and I rarely have any opinion about baby names.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 27/06/2015 00:14

It's a fine name! but it's a no from me. Old fashioned in a bad way.

FraggleHair · 27/06/2015 00:30

Gilbert Blythe was my first crush but even at the height of my adoration I never crushed on his name. In fact it always made me wince slightly.

It's a no from me.

Mehitabel6 · 27/06/2015 07:31

Don't do it! You can't know if he will have a strong enough personality to carry off such a dreadful name.

Woooooohoooooo · 27/06/2015 07:32

Love it!!!!!

Can be Gil or Bertie

GinUpGirl · 29/06/2015 20:07

I used to go out with one, who was so much of an arsehole I can't think past it!

Much nicer alternatives for using the nickname Bert imo!

MrsPeeee · 29/06/2015 21:38

If you like the shortening of Bertie you could go for Albert instead? Don't like Gilbert!

MrsMarigold · 29/06/2015 21:41

Yuck!

DramaAlpaca · 29/06/2015 21:43

I really don't like it, sorry!

UnspecialSnowflake · 29/06/2015 21:53

This is what I think of when I hear the name Gilbert. I do like Gil though, makes me think of the lovely Gil Grissom from CSI.

Gilbert and Gil both awful, sorry! If you like Bertie, why not just call him that?

BikeRunSki · 29/06/2015 21:58

I know a 5 yo Gilbert known as Bertie. I'm not wild about it, and would rather use Robert or Albert as a longer name for "Bertie".

whatstheplanphil · 29/06/2015 22:00

Love it, fantastic name

AWhistlingWoman · 29/06/2015 22:04

This is who I think of when I hear the name Gilbert. Swoon.
Although unspecial has rather spoiled the name for me now - forgotten all about THAT Gilbert.

Gilbert?
DandyDan · 29/06/2015 23:09

Gilbert Norrell from "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell".

reuset · 30/06/2015 10:09

RIP that Gilbert

Branleuse · 30/06/2015 10:16

its one of my ds' middle names, as its dps granddads name.

I like it, obviously

Dunkyourcustardcream · 30/06/2015 10:27

Like it. Might suggest to DH tonight. Wanted Albert but DS's best friend is called that. Love Bertie too. I try to picture myself shouting the name in McDonald's. Bertie get down, Bertie mind that lady, Bertie eat your nuggets. If it sounds ok in a McDonald's scenario it's a good name. Wink

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 30/06/2015 10:28

Oh I quite like it. It's one of those cute on the name peg but powerful and strong in the board room.
Go for it.

NinjaPanda34 · 30/06/2015 10:35

I called my gallstone Gilbert. I've still got it in a jar. quite fond of it really

sidonie1 · 30/06/2015 12:45

I love it but it so divides opinion I was too afraid to use it. Also husband insisted he would get beaten in regularly at school with such a name...
