hyphenated girls names

I sometimes think hyphenated names are a bit much but they are an acquired taste. I knew a little Amelia-Jane once and it suited her very much. I would like to hear more hyphenated girls names, particularly ones ending in 1-syllable names such as Ann and Jean. What do you think?

I knew a Leigh-Anne. She was named after her father, Lee, apparently. Just looks stupid. I honestly can't think of a single English hyphenated first name that isn't awful. Open to being proved wrong.

Mari is not made up, it's a Welsh name- I know loads!

manicinsomniac · 31/05/2015 00:58

I'm a Rebecca-Jane.

I don't mind it - a bit of a differentiator from the other eleventy billion Rebeccas of the 1980s.

I also went to school with Carrie-Ann, Kelly-Ann, Lesley-Anne, Sarah-Marie, Anne-Marie, Billie-Jo, Jamie-Leigh and Anna-Maria.

Since becoming a teacher I have come across Amelia-Rose, Katie-Marie, Lily-Anna, Lili-Kitty, Amber-Jane, Eva-Louise, Jamie-Lee and Lily-May

For some reason I've never met a double barrelled boy

Not even a John-Paul?

I don't mind traditional versions that are made up of 2 fairly simple names e.g. Anne-Marie, Rose-Marie, Anne-Louise, Marie-Claire etc. None are names I would personally choose but the total number of syllables is not excessive so they don't sound silly IMO

I guess with the current flurry of Ellie-May, Lexi-Rose, Lily-Mae etc, although not to my taste, by the times they become grown women their names won't appear ridiculous as there are a lot about and they do tend to follow the traditional formula of a total of no more than 3 syllables

The ones that IMO are very tacky and are likely to sound slightly silly on a grown women are those that are combinations of made up or very cutesy names and/or result in a name beyond 4 syllables .....yes I'm thinking of the Shania-Leighanne, Daisy-Delilah, Karli-Kristina, Kimberley-Marie brigade here!! Sorry if that makes me a snob

I saw a Lottie-Mae on a cbeebies birthday card the other day. I just can't picture that past about age ten IYSWIM?

I grew up with a similar selection of Sarah-Janes and Anne-Maries, so they don't sound so odd.

Ehric GrinGrin don't be silly I'm sure there's plenty of names I don't like. Each to their own and all that. Personally I love it. But I may be a bit bias Grin

Met several Emma-Louise's over the years which I actually like. Also a few Emma-Kate's which I'm less keen on.

Something...blue can also sound a bit suggestive and risqué. I wouldn't use it for that reason either.

When I was growing up, similar to a pp, it was all double names with Marie most of all, or Sophie or Anne. These days it seems to be all cutesy (I think I said that earlier) and often very unwieldy and mismatched.

Kennington · 31/05/2015 14:58

Think how it looks printed at the top of a CV or if your surgeon who was about to operate on you introduced themselves with it.
But that is the same for any name, hyphenated or not.

WaferInMyCoffee · 31/05/2015 19:01

My midwife was called Anne-Marie, didn't think anything of it. Although maybe if she'd been called Pixie-Bleu I might have raised an eyebrow

OpheliaBitz · 31/05/2015 19:14

Anne-Marie is nice, and I've known several of them. I think there are some hyphenated names that are classic, and are recognised as names in their own right. A lot of the attempts to hyphenate names to be different or to prompt people to use the whole name don't really come off as well.

wesH · 02/06/2015 20:04

I'm not naming anything I just wanted to look at names

I love Anna-Maria.

Summerbreezer · 03/06/2015 20:57

My friend has an Anna-Rose, which I rather like. I am generally in the anti camp though.
