Boys name to go with Dutch surname

Dutchmamamoo · 27/05/2015 20:25

Like so many I am struggling to find the perfect boy's name!

The main constraint is that the name must work in both Dutch and English - and preferably be pronounced the same (or almost the same) in both. That pretty much rules out anything with a G in it, or anything starting with J.

It also has to work with a surname 'van de _' (single syllable last part).

One name we do both quite like is Alexander. But my main concern is that it rhymes a little bit with the surname (xander, van de). Is that something that would bother you? Any other ideas for nice international names?

Thanks in advance!

That's a pretty extreme rhyme! If you really like it you should go for it, but how about Thomas or Nicolas?

Yes I think so too! DP says he'll always be called Alex so it won't be an issue.... I disagree!

We know too many other Thomases but Nicholas is also on our maybe list, I think that could be a good option...

Go or it, I love Alexander.

Getabloominmoveon · 27/05/2015 20:42

Alexander is lovely.

Having Dutch/british offspring myself, here are a few ideas

Max, Casper, Tom, Johan, Frans (Francis), Lukas, Bart, Oscar, Willem, Ivan, Sebastian, Mark, Ruben, Christian, Bruno

Or why not just go Dutch with a nice English nickname...good conversation starter: Lodewijk, Gijs, Maurits, Abel, Joris, Hessel....

Succes!

A good biblical name would work with the VanDer.....

Peter
Daniel
Mark
Michael
etc.

DampAndRotten · 28/05/2015 15:07

How do you pronounce "Van der"? Unless it's pronounced "vahn der" I think it's fine with Alexander (iyswim!)

Otherwise I really like Peter

Psippsina · 28/05/2015 15:16

I like Wim, you could have Willem/William maybe, or Jens, something else single syllable would go well with a long surname.

Sylvester
Felix
Dexter
Erik
Marcus
Miles
Abraham
Gregory

I've always liked Emil (Emeil I believe in Dutch) after the character from Jo's Boys (Little Women sequel). Or Felix is a real failsafe. Just had a look at the top 100 Dutch names and there are plenty of crossovers- Levi, Finn, Adam. All relatives will know what to do with those!

Serafinaaa · 28/05/2015 19:38

I know a Dutch little boy - Bastiaan.

How about Tobias or Paul?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 28/05/2015 19:55

When I worked in Amsterdam I shared an office with Leon van der Laan. I have always loved his name! Great guy.

MamaLazarou · 28/05/2015 20:37

My Dutch colleague is called Floris. I've always admired his name.

JustHavinABreak · 28/05/2015 20:42

Eric
Leo
Max
Luke

Personally if the surname is long, I think a one or two syllable first name would be best.

FiveExclamations · 28/05/2015 20:48

Harold, Issac, or Vincent.

lljkk · 28/05/2015 21:06

I know a Michael van de (blank) (Dutch-Anglo heritage).

froggyjump · 28/05/2015 22:42
