Anyone like these names or think they'll be revived soon?

I can see some names of this era coming back soon, like Jean, Joan, Irene, Vera, Dorothy, Sylvia, Marian, Nora etc. They'll probably be the next wave of popular 'old-fashioned' names.

Allthatnonsense · 23/05/2015 22:53

I think on the way back.

Not sure about Barbara or Beryl, but if they sounded pretty once they can again.

Quasilulu · 24/05/2015 01:06

Joyce is ghastly

DampAndRotten · 24/05/2015 07:50

I like Joyce, Jean & Joan as middle names. Not keen on the others.

MokunMokun · 24/05/2015 07:57

I was talking to a Barbara the other day and it struck me what an odd name it was.

Mehitabel6 · 24/05/2015 08:01

They will come back- just a bit early at the moment - we are still on the earlier generation of 'old lady' names like Ruby, Elsie, Ivy, Pearl etc

Victoria Coren Mitchell calling her daughter Barbara is probably the start.

paxtecum · 24/05/2015 08:01

Marion, Susan, Angela, Joanne, Pauline, Linda, Clare, Sheila, June, Ann, Catherine, Eileen, Patricia, Maureen, Karen, Carol, Sally, Deborah, Joyce, Helen are all names popular in the 50s and 60s. They are your mothers's names so you don't like them.

In twenty years time when they are grandmother and great grandmother names they will all be back.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/05/2015 09:03

I reckon they'll be very popular in about 10 years time.

I think they're all bloody awful though. One of the names listed is my paternal grandmothers, I love her dearly but no, there will be no name honouring going on.

MamaLazarou · 24/05/2015 09:04

Yes, dinner lady names are definitely on their way back in. Gloria, Dorothy, Barbara... I love them!

BreeVDKamp · 24/05/2015 09:08

I was at a midwife clinic on fri and there was a maybe 3-year-old Janet in the waiting room. Thought that was a nice change!

But these names aren't my cup of tea really. Agree they'll be what our kids call our grandkids.

Sophronia · 24/05/2015 11:10

I do like Gloria, I think it's quite pretty!

MrsBungle · 24/05/2015 11:13

I like Gloria too. Joy is lovely. Joyce, Janet and Barbara are not pleasant names to me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/05/2015 11:18

Oh my god Mama, the paint stripping look my Grandmother would give if she heard her name being described as a "dinner lady" name Grin Grin Grin

Marisola · 24/05/2015 11:46

How on earth can they all be "bloody awful"? The names that have been mentioned have nothing in common apart from having been popular around the same time.

Some of the names I like, some I dislike. Treat each name on its own merits and don't just dismiss them because they're names of people your parents know, or whatever.

CitronVert · 24/05/2015 11:57

I think names tend to come back in fashion after skipping 3 generations, so using great-grandma names rather than grandma names.

E.g. I'm 45 and My great Grandma's generation were things like Louisa, Lily, Alice etc. which I like, but my Grandma's generation were Elsie, Olive etc. which are becoming more fashionable but which I'm not keen on. They're probably more the great grandma name generation for younger parents.

My mum's generation is the Joyce, Barbara, Janet one so I predict they'll start to come back in a few years (with a few pioneers like VCM).

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/05/2015 17:34

Maris

I was just referring to the ones in the op not the longer list.

MamaLazarou · 24/05/2015 20:13

Apologies to alis's granny! Grin

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/05/2015 20:23

Victoria Coren's and David Mitchell's litle girl is Barbara.

marshmallowpies · 25/05/2015 22:59

I do like Janet, and Jennifer too - both of those are worth reviving I reckon! Jane is by far my favourite name of that era, though - DD1's middle name is Jane.

reuset · 25/05/2015 23:07

Still on the old fashioned side for mainstream taste, though obviously some, albeit few, people are still using them for new babies.

I can see Gloria becoming popular.

shakemysilliesout · 26/05/2015 09:18

I think Maggie gyllenhal- jakes sister, has a baby gloria.

NinjaLeprechaun · 26/05/2015 11:47

"I was talking to a Barbara the other day and it struck me what an odd name it was."
Ouch. Grin

I've always had an uncomfortable relationship with my name, to be honest. It's of the wrong generation (or I am...). I've tried changing it several times, but nothing has stuck.

One thing I do like about it though, it means female barbarian in Latin - which feels appropriate. Wink

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/05/2015 11:51

I live these names.

But then I really dislike the super girly, soft, frilly names so popular at the moment. Isabella type names leave me cold. Give me Jane or Marion any day.Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/05/2015 11:51

*love, not live

GooseyLoosey · 26/05/2015 11:56

I know one young Barbara. Her 9 yr old peers don't find the name odd at all.
