How many characters is too many? Is this too much?

DH and I have a short list of two girls names and two boys names.

We have chosen two middle names and they will have a double barrelled surname.

The girls names would be either 34 or 37 characters and the boys names would also be 34 or 37 characters.

Is this too much? Would they find it difficult to fit their name onto official forms?

I don't really want to drop either of the middle names as we have one from DH's side and one from my side of the family.

Sod forms. Most of them are maybe thirty characters but any important ones will have more, or another space to put them on. One can often omit middle names anyway, and in adulthood I find many of my previously double-barrelled friends are dropping a surname, particularly professionally for email - eg John.Smith@ rather than John.Taylor-Smith@

I think syllables and everyday manageability is more important than very occasional forms.

Thanks MrsHathaway.

I think we will just go with it. I have a long name and it hasn't ever really bothered me.

Is it twins? Could you use just one family name for each, one has yours, one has DH's.

2boys2girls · 22/05/2015 20:40

I could have wrote this post all my children are double-barrelled and 2 middle names varying from 30-34 letters, never been a problem though on some things the second middle initial is often missed off,

Koalafications · 22/05/2015 20:43

Through No, not twins! We just don't know if we are having a boy or girl and haven't decided on which of the two boys & girls names that we want to use.

Thanks 2boys so it hasn't really been an issue for you then?

I had two middle names and double barrelled surname when growing up. I flipping hated it. Every commented on it and I became known as Floaty long name. I remember struggling to fit my names on to forms. Sorry!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/05/2015 20:50

Apologies!

Just worked out my DB has 34 characters, I've never heard him complain about it.

doublepotions · 22/05/2015 20:54

Why a double barreled surname? What if your dc has children with someone with a double barrelled surname? Your dgc will be quadruple barreled.

Koalafications · 22/05/2015 20:58

"Floaty long name" Grin gosh, kids will pick on each other for anything!

doubleportions because I didn't take DH's name.

Sod forms.

It's a minor issue, if it's an issue at all.

5madthings · 22/05/2015 21:03

It's not an issue, ds1 is Theodore then he has two middle names and a double barreled surname, it hasnt been a problem. He is currently doing his gcses and has joked he should get extra time to fill in his name on the form. It's over 30 characters.

Dd will have the same issue, the other three madthings only got one middle name each.

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/05/2015 21:06

49 letters in ds name and 42 in dds no one has ever thought there was a problem. They both have 3 middle names.

Trinpy · 22/05/2015 21:07

My ds has a 35 letter name and it's not been an issue so far. His surname is also double barrelled because dh and I kept our own surnames but for informal things (like swimming classes, toddler groups, etc) we tend to only use the surname that matches the parent who takes him to the group iyswim!

I have 30 letters in my name and my dad has 37 and it's never caused either of us any problems.

Cleaver83 · 22/05/2015 21:10

My kids have 25 & 23 characters and they just for in forms. I wouldn't worrt nane that what you want x

Cleaver83 · 22/05/2015 21:11

Sorry typings terrible x

Koalafications · 22/05/2015 21:21

5madthings Theodore is one of the boys names Smile you have excellent taste!

Glad to hear that there are others with long names who haven't had any issues.

Be warned - my DS's name has 31 characters in total. The passport forms have space for 30 characters, additional characters have to be pur in the 'other information' section.

On DS's first passport, his second middle name was missed out on the main page, and under the 'official observations' bit on the reverse it had 'The holders name is...' [full name].

When his passport was renewed, they didn't bother putting his full name on the observations page, just missed out his second middle name altogether.

I have found that lots of official forms only have space for 25-30 characters. I love DS's names but he is going to hate me when he gets older!

GrrrrrBear · 22/05/2015 21:52

I've four DC with normal length names and I find filling out form a pain Grin I'd be fed up if they had super long names. 1 or 2 kids with long names would be ok but I wouldn't recommend having four kids with long names.

My Mums name is over forty characters (5 first names? ) it's a bit daft because she never uses any of her middle names.

MrsBeeBeeBee · 22/05/2015 22:00

My husband has 33 syllables. And it is annoying for forms.

I already had lots of complications with DDs passport form so I was muttering expletives under my breath when I realised I couldn't fit his name on the form either.
and his graduation certificate from uni only has the 30 or so characters it could fit on it, so they just gave up and missed end of his name off. Ridiculous!

So it's something I've always said I'd keep in mind when naming a child.

SmokyRobinson · 22/05/2015 22:04

My initial reaction was that it's too long, until I counted my own name, which has 33 characters Grin
Never been a problem, not even thought about it until now.
Hardly ever fill my middle names in, forms often require only initials for the middle names

5madthings · 22/05/2015 22:39

We didn't have a problem with ds1's passport. We just renewed it actually and it had his full name.

2boys2girls · 23/05/2015 08:46

No its never been an issue in hindsight I prob would have stuck with one middle name as h the 2nd gets over looked anyway but I rather that than the surname being singled ...
