I can imagine a baby, toddler, teen and older lady named this but not sure of a middle aged woman.
she would be May for short as its a family name.
which is the traditional spelling and how would you spell it?
do you like it?

The traditional spelling is Maisie, and the name Maisie is a short form of Margaret or Mairead.

May was traditionally short for Mary, a different name altogether (or, less usually, for Mabel or Margaret). Or else it was a name in its own right, the English-language version of Maia, a Roman goddess.

I prefer May....it's beautiful. Maisie sounds just too much like a small girl to me.

felkov · 20/05/2015 20:55

The only Maisy I've ever known is a lovely King Charles Spaniel, so it doesn't work for me as a girl's name at any age, sorry!

What about Martha instead?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/05/2015 20:59

Maisie (really like). But I don't like May!

sweetpeame · 20/05/2015 22:07

Agree that Maisie is less suitable for a grown up woman than for a baby/child/teenager/possibly older lady. It's quite a nice name though and I like May as a nn even if it isn't a traditional one for Maisie. So why not?

howeasyisthat · 21/05/2015 09:06

I suggested Maisy to my DH who asked if it was short for Mayonnaise Hmm ! I agree it's a bit cutesy for an adult but a great nickname.

dottiemad · 21/05/2015 10:15

We like Maisie too and is a favourite, we will call her Maisie but have Mairead as a 'proper' name.

YDdraigGoch · 21/05/2015 10:30

To be pedantic, and as others have said, Maisie is in itself a nn (for Margaret), as is May.

Further shortening Maisie to May seems silly. If intend calling the child May on a day to day basis, and think Maisie is too cutsie for an actual name, why not call the child Margaret, shortened to May. I love the name Margaret.

I also like Maisie as a nick name too though. I prefer it to May actually, though you say May is a family name.

I would recommend scrapping the Maisie and going straight to May, as its a family name and sounds much more "timeless" than Maisie, which is very cutesy and not really appropriate for an adult woman. But if your heart is set on maisie, then go for the IE spelling, i guess.

iwouldgoouttonight · 22/05/2015 12:52

If you can imagine an older woman called Maisie she must have been middle aged at some point too! I think we find it hard to imagine it as an adult name because it wasn't a popular name for babies in the 60s/70s, but nowadays there are lots of, what people might think of as 'cutsie' names, so in 20/30 years time there will be lots of middle aged Daisy/Lily/Evie/Tilly/Millies so it will seem normal.

So what I'm trying to say (in a very roundabout way Grin) is if you like the name go for it. I'd go for the traditional Maisie spelling.

My grandmother was called Maisie. It was a perfectly normal name for grown up women around the 30s and 40s. It will be the same in 20 years time when the current batch of Maisies have all grown up.

chaletdays · 22/05/2015 14:46

Her full name was MaryAnn by the way, not Margaret.
