Names needed for identical twins

Help! I am a first time mum due to have identical twins in two weeks and we are really struggling for names. Our surname is Brown, which is pretty boring really and so I think leaves open the possibility of something more interesting as a first name. Having said that, I don't really want anything that is too 'out there'.

For boys, our current thoughts are Arthur and Wilfred. They seem to go quite well together. I am not 100% sold on Wilfred but the husband seems to love it and I am fairly relaxed about it. I do like that it can be Will or Fred/Freddy if we want.

For girls, we really haven't found anything we love. Ones that have reached the shortlist (but we still are not sure are 'the one') include Olivia, Poppy, Ivy (but husband thinks Ivy sounds like she might be a bit mean?!) and Alice. What do you think mumsnetters? Any other ideas?

Wildcards suggested by the husband this morning have included Marlowe and Franklin (both for girls). Not sure how I feel about those!

We haven't got as far as middle names - at this late stage I will be pleased if we just have first names for the birth, middle names can come after! We don't want anything that is too matchy matchy, but they obviously need to sound good together.

Pre-requisites for names are: easy to spell and it needs to be a 'proper' name (eg. husband was campaigning for a while for Flossie (as an actual name) but I rejected it on the basis it would need to be Florence and shortened then to Flossie - which then runs the risk of the poor girl being called Flo Brown in the playground, which sounds like a nasty stomach bug....

Hope this all makes sense - any help or suggestions are welcome!

Thank you!

Tryphena and Tryphosa

(Romans 16:12) Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.

Maybe not. Persis is nice too.

I may have to get some cats. Grin

Louise and Margaret!
Victor and Francis?

thursdayschile · 24/05/2015 12:01

Our identical twin girls are Jade and Eden -might be a bit 'green' to go with your surname. Husband wanted them to be named Aurora and Minerva - he nearly had me convinced Wink

With your surname, do test the surname/initial thing. At our school we were often called by that & I have visions of Poppy being very embarrassed to be called "Brown P(ee)".
My hypothetical twin daughters are Katherine (Kate) and Georgina (Nina).

Olivia is lovely and not a paint colour :) I also love the idea of anagram twins! Like another poster said, please don't start them with the same initial!

Bovnydazzler · 26/05/2015 06:30

I second Wilbur over Wilfred.

Alice is a lovely name.

SofiaAmes · 26/05/2015 06:32

Names not to give them....real twins that I have known over the years:

Ronald and Donald McDonald
Anna and Annette

Purpleflamingos · 26/05/2015 06:41

Zoe and Erin?

NinjaLeprechaun · 26/05/2015 08:52

"Gilbert and Wilfred. Just gorgeous together."
Wil and Gil though? Hmm

I like Alice, but I'm not sure what could go with it. Emma, maybe?
Alice and Emma?

Don't use the same initial whatever you do. I love all the names on your list (except Marlowe and Franklin, which sound like cats' names to me).

twinmum31 · 27/05/2015 22:32

Thanks everyone! It's a relief that Arthur and Wilfred get the go ahead from the majority of you. I have however had a scan today and the consultant accidentally referred to them as girls we think so we might have to kiss goodbye to our beloved boys names!

Marlowe and Franklin are definitely out...it was a mad moment by the other half I think to even suggest them!

I showing slight signs of pre eclampsia so might need a section tomorrow now instead of next week...which adds to the pressure somewhat!!

So, the twins unexpectedly arrived yesterday and are (drumroll please!!!) much to our intense surprise, BOYS! Have attached a pic.

In my drug ridden haze yesterday I didn't want to name them and wanted to wait until I could take a step back and think about it properly.

So mumsnetters, we think:

Arthur Andrew Brown
Wilfred Christopher Brown

Middle names are after our respective deceased fathers.

I do have a soft spot for 'Albie', short for Albert but as an actual name think I prefer Arthur to Albert. If we were to replace Wilfred with Albert I think Arthur and Albert are probably too similar (and begin with the same letter, which isn't ideal).

Are these names ones that will stand them in good stead for life?! Feels like a huge responsibility all of a sudden (that and actually being a mum!).

Thanks all

Twin Mum 31 xx

Ps. I think Wilbert and Gilbert are too similar, but thanks for the suggestion!

Arthur and Wilfred sound lovely to me! Congratulations. I love a poster who updates! I agree, prefer Arthur to Albert. Albert and Wilfred would be a bit too jeeves and wooster (IMO) but Arthur and Wilfred takes that vibe down a notch.

It is a weird feeling, I remember thinking my dd was only called 'hername' because I decided that Confused It seemed 'a bit mad Ted'.

Lovely names for your beautiful boys. Congratulations!

MagentaVitus · 30/05/2015 21:52

Parents of twins, here's a question:

How do you decide which twin gets which name?!

TheDeafeningClatterofDuplo · 30/05/2015 22:03

Ah congrats! Just lovely! Would avoid initials 'WC' though if poss...
