"Boy names spelled like girl names" - er, think I'll pass thanks.

My email account is for some reason linked to a US news feed and occasionally I come across parenting articles from the other side of the Pond. This one today contains some (in my opinion) truly horrendous naming suggestions:

"Boy names spelled like girl names

We switched up the spelling of some of our favorite tomboy baby names to make them a little more feminine. Of course, you can always keep the traditional spelling, but it is fun to see some other options.

â—¦Rian instead of Ryan
â—¦Charlee instead of Charlie
â—¦Logann instead of Logan
â—¦Bobbie instead of Bobby
â—¦Wylee instead of Wylie
â—¦Mykel instead of Michael
â—¦Ayden instead of Aiden
â—¦Tristen instead of Tristan
â—¦Jamie instead of Jamey
â—¦Kalvin instead of Calvin
â—¦Cameron instead of Kameron
â—¦Rilee instead of Riley
â—¦Alijah instead of Elijah
â—¦Jayson instead of Jason
â—¦Kaleb instead of Caleb
â—¦Gerry instead of Jerry
â—¦Jean instead of Gene
â—¦Kris instead of Chris
â—¦Skott instead of Scott
â—¦Bailee instead of Bailey
â—¦Kleo instead of Cleo
â—¦Erin instead of Aaron
â—¦Kacy instead of Casey
â—¦Jon instead of John "

Since when did anyone spell it "Kameron"?? It's a Scottish surname FFS!)

Oh, sorry about the weird "&#9702" thing, they were bullet points when I copied an pasted. You still get the gist though...

Good Lord. I wish I had as much time in my hands as the people who write shit articles like that!

Loving Jean instead of Gene. How original and insipred Confused

WomanScorned · 19/05/2015 05:28

Oh, how utterly shit!

"Skott instead of Scott" is a particular gem.

Though it is interesting to think about how we share a common language yet how very different American name tastes are from British ones - they really don't go in much for the -y and -ie cutesy flowery type names that are in vogue in the UK, do they? Poppy, Ruby, Daisy, Rosie, Evie, Darcy etc etc. In fact I would be fascinated to see what a "last three baby girls you have heard of" name thread would look like in the US. Any American Mumsnetters out there to fill us in?

An American name I quite like is "Paige", which is the name of the daughter on "The Americans", though it's a bit 80s (series is set in the 80s).

PS my RL name is apparently synonymous with White Trash in the US - I learned that from Freakonomics!

They are awful apart from three or four, most of them are still boys names just spelt wrong differently Hmm

Logann?!

Floggingmolly · 19/05/2015 07:50

Jon instead of John... And Cameron instead of Kameron; it is spelt Cameron, isn't it?? What a pile of shite Hmm

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 19/05/2015 07:50

They just seem to have ee instead of y or ie though, don't they?

I wonder if that list looks as strange to US eyes as it does to UK ones?

fiveacres · 19/05/2015 08:18

I know a Bailee Grin

Dance Moms (I know!) featured a Campbell, Hadley, Mackenzie and a Peyton. All female. It just seems far more the done thing in the US to use surnames as first names. I know we have Riley and the like but they are almost exclusively male and unlike America aren't seen as 'middle class.'

Yes.

Then again, the US is a big place, with a lot of very odd diverse people in it, so who knows how this list would play in another part of the country. To me it looks like it's trying way, way too hard.

Just made my morning :)

Jamie instead of Jamey

Ar the y sugesting that jamey is the "correct boys name" and Jamie is an alternative way to spell it if you are giving the name to a girl?

Whut?

Valsoldknickers · 19/05/2015 09:08

Rian is a boy's name. It means little king in Irish.

Nothing wrong with Gerry, Cameron or Jamie either.
