Would everyone just call her 'Arn-a'?

I don't think so. It's such a well-known name, people aren't going to change from the 'normal' pronunciation because of a movie.

treaclesoda · 13/05/2015 13:30

I've never seen Frozen but my nephew insists the girl in the film is called Aw-na. Is it pronounced really strangely in the film?

Anna is a lovely name btw, and I think it is a classic.

wildpoppy · 13/05/2015 13:31

Yeah - it's pronounced in a mid atlantic drawl - Ar-na or Aw-na.

Ah, I get it. He was very irate when I saw it written down and said 'is it not Anna?' Grin

fustybritches · 13/05/2015 13:33

I think that's how they say it in Norway/wherever the film is set ...

If I see the name Anna written down, I think Anna, not Arna, and I've seen Frozen many, many times.

Teladi · 13/05/2015 13:33

Anna is still OK! When I talk to DD about Frozen Anna - we still call her Anna and not Aw-na!

FresherThanYou · 13/05/2015 13:36

Lol no Anna is a beautiful classic name

evertonmint · 13/05/2015 13:42

Anna is fine, will always be Anna not Arna

However, Elsa is ruined for at least the next 20 years I think.

sweetpeame · 13/05/2015 13:53

Anna is a classic name and can't be ruined by a film! An Anna could be any age - I know one in her 50's, one who's 35 and a one year old! If I met a baby called Anna i wouldn't think "oh she's been named after the Frozen character". I might associate that statement with an Elsa though... But that's simply because I haven't come across anyone with that name in my 30+ years of life...

Tootaboo · 13/05/2015 14:05

I like Anna and wouldn't think of the film or pronounce it like they do, I know a few little kids who pronounce it like that though but that will fade when popularity dies down. I'd use the name but I've got an Auntie Anna and she isnt very nice to me so ruined it for me!

I agree with sweetpeame it's so classic I'm not sure it can be ruined.

It's in my top five for my fictional daughter.

wigglesrock · 13/05/2015 14:40

My youngest is Anna (she's 4). I don't really associate with Frozen even though she's prime Frozen demographic Smile. We just say An Na. It's a lovely name (obviously Smile), lots of people have commented on it. It is very popular where I live (NI) I think it's a top ten name, but all three of my daughters have popular names. It's funny, my Nana thinks it's a very old fashioned name.

MagentaVitus · 13/05/2015 17:09

No, Anna is far too neutral. There are tonnes of Annas, so it is much harder to associate it with one specific one.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/05/2015 17:10

No I think it's too much of a classy elegant name. However I feel sorry for all the baby Annas out there as they will have to explain that their nsme is Anna not Arna. To me they're completely different names.

TarkaTheOtter · 13/05/2015 17:12

I disagree with everyone else. I think the peer group of a hypothetical child born now will definitely associate it with frozen.

verelab · 13/05/2015 21:09

I agree with Tarkatheotter. There seems to have been an explosion of Annas round here, and I can only attribute it to Frozen. I think it may become very popular again.

Personally, I don't like the name - I think it sounds "smug" and is a bit dull.
Why not put "anna" at the end of a name if you like the sound:
Rosanna; Joanna; Susanna.
For some reason (considering that I don't like Anna), I like all these names - and they are far less popular at the moment and less likely to suddenly "trend"

Good luck with whatever you choose.
