It is biblical, Skeppers, but it has become somewhat chavvy overused by the great unwashed.
Shame, really.

Shinyshoes2 · 11/05/2015 20:48

Isn't it short for Leviticus and he killed someone didn't he ?
Biblical
I prefer Leviticus to Levi

Snowflake15 · 11/05/2015 20:50

It's DH name - love itGrin

WireCat · 11/05/2015 20:51

My nephew is called Levi. He's top of his school. Will get all A* at gcse.

How is a name chavvy?!

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 11/05/2015 23:50

I like it (prefer Deon though!)

Eigg · 12/05/2015 00:01

It seems like a perfectly normal name to me, I went to school and uni with two different Levi's. both of whose Mother's would be appalled at suggestions that it's 'Chavvy'

I'd probably make the assumption that you/your partners family were of Jewish background (as were the Levi's that I know) but wouldn't think anything of it if you weren't.

It is my son's name, it was met with some shocked faces when he was born 7 years ago but, now I cannot imagine him being called anything else, and because of him I consider it a very "normal" name and so do our families. He is the only one in his year, but, one of two in his school (not that it matters but, just saying)

We are not jewish in fact we are lapsed Irish Catholics.

HellKitty · 12/05/2015 03:47

I know a girl of 12 called it but a lot of the teachers pronounced it 'Levvy'. Prior to that I heard it screamed across Mothercare one day and I knew a Rottweiler called it.

IggyStrop · 12/05/2015 04:14

I like it a lot and have never heard the "chavvy" (urgh, how fucking snobby) connotation. Classic Jewish name.

Florrieboo · 12/05/2015 04:19

Why would anyone pronounce it Levvy? Have they not heard of the jeans brand?

BestIsWest · 12/05/2015 06:07

It was a family name, going back generations in my family, not Jewish at all as far as I know.

TheNewStatesman · 12/05/2015 06:51

I like it--had no idea it was considered chavvy!

SmallBee · 12/05/2015 06:56

Really surprised people find it chavvy, it's not so where I am from. I don't know anyone with the name but love it, although I really love most Old Testament names so that's hardly surprising. Most people will know how to say it because of the jeans company.
