OP, I could not finish my post yesterday (DD)...
Nowadays I love my name but did not like it at all when I was a child in Spain in the 70s and 80s (too many old ladies called Carmen, too many of them either single or sanctimonious). I would have loved Emma... but now I hate it!
I have a Carmen at home (dd2) but would have liked to use these two other names (my two favorites out of a longer list I just posted in another thread) instead of Carmen...
MencÃa, pronounced more or less like mehn-thee-a
It's a medieval name, used at the time in Castile and Navarra, means hill.
Valme, was my preferred substitute of Carmen prior to start liking my own name.
Our Lady of Valme is the co-saint patron of Dos Hermanas, in Seville. Valme comes from what King Ferdinand III the Saint said when trying to conquer Seville from the moors in 1248, asking for Our Lady’s help: "¡Váleme, Señora, que si te dignas hacerlo, en este lugar te labraré una capilla, en la que a tus pies depositaré como ofrenda, el pendón que a los enemigos de España y de nuestra Santa Fe conquiste!". Basically, help me during the battle and I’ll built a church in this spot.
