Also know a couple of Romans, although I doubt Norman will make a comeback.

Again more english folklore, what about Morgana.

Tbh I think the Emperor Nero ruins that name!

re Loki - and I am really really sorry if this sounds negative; it's not, it's just fact. Loki, as well as being deceitful/malicious etc, said himself (*as recorded in the old sagas) that he was fated to have a hateful life. In the old stories, he is the personification (however you read the symbolism) of wilfully deceptive, malicious, evil. No-one even in the old days took the bestiality etc entirely seriously. It was all symbolic of generalised 'beyond the accepted norms' behaviour. But even today, that's not fun; it's often criminal.

Loki is almost unknown as a name today in Nordic countries where they are familiar with the myths: www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Loki

But your baby, your choice of names. Absolutely.

nailsathome · 04/05/2015 20:33

As I said flora, we have read and, as intelligent educated people, understood them and so are fully aware of his character. However, since I hold no beliefs in any gods of any kind, his character is entirely fictional and therefore has no impact on whether or not I like the name.

Do you also advise against calling children Cain, for example?

florascotia · 04/05/2015 20:58

Actually, I would not choose Cain. Not because I'm a believer, but because I honestly do think that ancient myths and legends often contain some emotional or philosophical truth about the human condition. To me, they are not just meaningless stories to pick and mix from. I genuinely think it's a bit disrespectful to past peoples to consider ancient myths as 'fictional'. They may often not be- of course they're not - literally representational, but there are many other kinds of truth.

And, I really, really don't want to be confrontational, but many - maybe most -names still do come with some past contextual/ cosmological/ theological baggage attached. I would not wish to ignore that.

florascotia · 04/05/2015 21:05

nails Just to repeat - those are just my views. Each to their own. Am not being remotely critical of others, just stating my own opinions. Best wishes!

RedToothBrush · 04/05/2015 21:34

I love Gods names, but I think I'd have to agree with flora about both Cain and Loki. We did seriously consider Loki at one point. But in the end I did feel it was just a step too far for me simply because I'd always wonder if it was tempting fate. Especially as there is a lot of psychologically about how your name can influence your life. So as much as I'd like to say I wasn't superstitious, its just 'there'.

applecatchers36 · 04/05/2015 21:42

Persephone
Sabrina
Apollo

IvoryMadonna · 04/05/2015 21:54

I wish all parents would remember that the name they choose will be another person's name - not their own. It's the child who has to bear the burden of an stigmatised name.

Bluestocking · 04/05/2015 22:02

Florascotia is absolutely right. There are so many fantastic names to choose from, why choose one which is so freighted with everything bad?

Teachermummy27 · 07/05/2015 17:19

Yep, have to agree. There are connotations and associations to many names.....like why so few German babies are christened Adolf! I'd avoid Cain too. Interestingly I've taught two Cains. Both loved up to the association very well indeed Confused

Takver · 07/05/2015 18:06

I know a little Zeus, fab name.

crassula · 07/05/2015 18:11

Children do just grow to own their names, and then their names just become them. I had a friend who named her child something all of our friends ( and her family) were horrified with. Now we just associate the name with being gorgeously cool and sweet, as that is what he is. ( honestly, the name seemed awful, but now I'm wishing that if I had another son I could name him that, as I can only see it positively)
