Phi'Bee

Someone who I know vaguely, and who I have as a friend on FB has just announced the birth of their daughter. Lovely squishy little girl.

They have called her Phi'Bee, and I must admit my face kind of went Confused Shock Hmm when I saw her name.

It's made me genuinely intrigued though. Has anyone else given their child such an unconventional spelling of a name? If so, what were your motivations? What does your child think about it?

My name is one that was pretty popular amongst my generation, but that has a number of accepted variations in spelling. As a child/teen, I used to hate people using the wrong spelling, but also got annoyed with having to spell it out to make sure people used the right one.

I'm much less bothered as an adult, but I still can't imagine going through life as a Phi'Bee (or similar) - having to spell it out constantly, and then see people's faces go Hmm or hear them say 'oh, that's...interesting.'

L-a is complete rubbish , another urban myth is Chlamydia.

WavyGlass · 02/05/2015 14:39

Several people have claimed on here to be the friend of the friend who was a HV/registrar/teacher of little Le-a. Despite the fact that no one ever seems to have found evidence that, in this country or elsewhere, a child was registered under that name. (Though there were some Ledashas.) Snopes has interesting stuff on the explicit racism of the original news 'story', where the US mother explaining the pronunciation of Le-a was clearly implied by her reported speech to be African-American, and underlined up by the racist comments left on the article.

Local, that's awful.

BitterChocolate · 02/05/2015 14:49

I am in a special interest Facebook group with someone named Mush Elle. I assume it's pronounced Michelle, but I daren't ask as she is very argumentative and practised at taking the most innocuous comments the wrong way.

marmaladegranny · 02/05/2015 14:53

My DC were at school with a child named KT…. I suspect it was because there were several children around the area with the conventional spellings.

Bobian123 · 02/05/2015 15:44

I know a few Lauren's and know 1 with it spelt Loren. I bloody hate that spelling!

OrionsAccessory · 02/05/2015 15:54

Bitter Chocolate, some people use weird spellings of their names on fb so they can't be searched so there is a glimmer of hope perhaps that she doesn't spell it that way irl?!

Bobian123 · 02/05/2015 15:54

There was a vicar in wandsworth a few years ago who refused to christen a boy the parents had named 4real.

IvoryMadonna · 02/05/2015 16:00

It makes me think of the old horror film The Abominable Dr. Phibes.

charlyn · 02/05/2015 16:03

alwayshavepeckham · 02/05/2015 16:11

I know a Cristian, presumed the DM couldn't spell.

Maryberryjam · 02/05/2015 16:14

I think with some of the dodgy spellings of names people will always think the parents just couldnt spell , instead of thinking they were trying to be original or quirky .

BehindEveryCloud · 02/05/2015 18:53

"4real" rejected... Baby named Superman instead Confused

alwayshavepeckham · 02/05/2015 20:08

Ken his mum's from Tyne and Weir and his dad's from Doncaster but maybe he was conceived in Spain Hmm

kickassangel · 02/05/2015 20:11

There are plenty of cultures that do use apostrophes in names. We happily adopt their food, and often a few words, any reason why not to use naming styles? I agree that to a British person that looks like a bizarre name which would be pronounced Fieby (maybe), but since working in a multicultural school I have learned to be a lot more open minded about names and culture.
