Unique girls names

Hi all,
Ive narrowed soon to be dd's name down to:
Kailia pronounced kai-lee-ah
Taleah pronounced ta-lee-ah, commonly spelt talia
Brooke
Kendall
I wanted something different that not everyones heard of, but OH thinks these names are borderline chavy (i was aiming for pretty but unique lol).

So would you consider these names chavy? And which one you pick?

I don't find Brooke or Kendall (or most other surname names) particularly pretty.

Of the other two, I'd go for Kailia, but if you want even stress on all the syllables, you might want to consider spelling it Kailiya.

chiruri · 30/04/2015 13:48

The fact that you had to explain how to pronouce the first two, I would definitely not choose them. It will get old very quickly for both you and your DD as she gets older.
Of the four names I like Brooke the best. Or Talia if spelt phonetically. Kendall makes me think of the mint cake, and of The Kardashian family.

IvoryMadonna · 30/04/2015 13:49

I see the first two as chavvy and the others as surnames. I dislike the creeping American fashion of giving surnames as forenames, especially to girls as they sound too masculine.

Isn't Kendall one of those Kardashian names? I feel dirty for even knowing that. Blush

manicinsomniac · 30/04/2015 13:52

I like Kendall. It's not necessarily a name I'd term 'unique and pretty', more 'unusual and cool' but I definitely like it.

Brooke I'm so so on.

If you want Ta-lee-ah I'd just go for Talia (or Thalia?) It's an unusual but accepted name and Taleah just looks made up.

Kailia I don't like. To me it seems like you're saying 'Kylie - er....'

holmessweetholmes · 30/04/2015 13:55

I'm not sure it's really borderline tbh! Brooke and Kendal aren't really unique. The other two are just made up variations on other names and she'd be having to tell people how to spell her name all the time. Your daughter will be unique anyway - she won't need a made - up name to make her unique. There are sooo many 'unique', eccentrically-spelled names around that it's quite the opposite of unique to have one!

HelenF350 · 30/04/2015 13:56

I love Xanthe (zan-thee) but dp hates it.

ClareAbshire · 30/04/2015 14:05

Sorry op but I think your partner has a point. Another one saying I don't like surname names or anything you have to explain pronunciation of.

Jellytotsandfruitpops · 30/04/2015 14:12

Thanks all,we both fell for sophia but my best friends just had a little girl called sophie and shes the type to make a fuss over the names being to similar so i guess its out of the equation. I liked kailia because it touches on my OH's haiwaiin roots. He liked the idea but couldnt find a hawaiin name we both liked lol!

Didnt think this naming business would be so hard-were both on opposite ends of the spectrum! Oh well back to the drawing board

I think you'd be better off giving your DD a nice ordinary name, and having a unique pet name for her.

I don't get this current fashion for made up unique names. Causes no end of problems for the namee when they are older.

MonstrousRatbag · 30/04/2015 14:15

I've always liked Talia (I remember the actress Talia Shire in the Godfather films) but I am not keen on your suggested 'novelty' spelling.

All the others are, I think, a bit gimmicky and will date badly.

Unusual names I like are
Siri/Syrie (you may not want this given the phone app!)
Aglaia
Felicia
Callista/Callisto
Hebe
Carina
Undine/Ondine
Daria
Pia
Sidonie/Sidony

LettuceLaughton · 30/04/2015 14:17

None of the names in the OP are unique. Thalia is nice. Very nice. The others, less so. Kailia sounds made up and Brooke and Kendall are absolutely not names people won't have heard of.

I like to see underused names being used but kre8tiv spellings tend to make the parents look a bit dim, IMHO.

Love the suggestion of Xanthe! You might like Aurora, maybe? Artemis?

Theas18 · 30/04/2015 14:18

TBH a " unique" ie made up name or a name that isn't really a name is going to sound either what ever " chavvy" is or off the wall celebrity try hard.

If you like Xanthe ( which isn't unique, but is a real beautiful but uncommon name) then go Greek!

All these are interesting a fit with your naming style. THere aren't many ( Ok maybe Uriana ) that wouldn't be fine in the UK

LettuceLaughton · 30/04/2015 14:20

Oh and Reneta nn Wren?

LettuceLaughton · 30/04/2015 14:22

Renata. Fat fingers.

Sophronia · 30/04/2015 14:27

I like Talia or Thalia

Jellytotsandfruitpops · 30/04/2015 14:28

Kailia and Taleah are both varations of hebrew names, my OH is haiwaiiian but i have israeli blood in me so we want a name to represent one of these ethnicitys Smile I get why brooke and kendall sound chavy but theres someting about them i liked (although there not hebrew or hawaiian Confused )

lastlines · 30/04/2015 14:29

Sorry but the desire to spell a name differently is a sort of chavvy cliché (DS-I-L's midwife used to laugh at people working out how to spell their children's names post birth. Not kind of her, but she got so sick of everyone thinking they were being you-neek.)
Just pick a name you love and spell it as classically as you can. I like Kailia and don't know the name. Is it Hawaiian?
Brooke and Kendall are quite common, definitely not unique.

Laquila · 30/04/2015 14:32

Do you like Elisha? Always reminds me of the Hebrew name Elisheva. Or Sheba? (Elisheba)

timelyreminder · 30/04/2015 14:35

I like Talia (I prefer this spelling), or Natalia with Talia for short.

carbolicsoaprocked · 30/04/2015 14:41

Sorry, I'm not a fan of Brooke or Kendall at all. However have you thought of Caela instead of Kailia (it means slender in Gaelic) or Natalia with nn Talia?

crazygirluk · 30/04/2015 15:21

How about Kaia? Pronounced ky-uh.

Threeplus1 · 30/04/2015 16:00

How about:
Leia - Hawaiian name but same sound as Hebrew Leah (it's on my list!) and a nicer meaning!
Noa - love this but dh doesn't, great Hebrew girls name
Keziah
Naomi
Salome

LittleBairn · 30/04/2015 16:07

I've known a few Brooke's I wouldn't consider it unique.
Any made up name is going to sound chavy you are better to go with a real name that is rarely used.

Jellytotsandfruitpops · 30/04/2015 16:19

I feel the need stress that kailia is a 'real' name, albeit a very uncommen one particarly in england as its a hawaiian name (but can also be traced back to hebrew roots) taleah is also a 'real' name but im having second thoughts and agree the normal spelling of talia is better for everyones sake (although im warming to thalia) Smile

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 30/04/2015 16:51

Hawaiian that wouldn't be too weird/chavy to English ears?

A few suggestions:
Alani
Alana
Lani
Lana
Ani
Kala
Kalena
Leilani
Anai

Beyond that a few 'rules of thumb' that might help you understand why you might be getting slightly negative reactions

I would generally stay away from K names (though I think you can get away with the two above as they are simple) as they have a tendency to be regarded as chavy atm. I personally like Kai, but there is Kai Rooney which screws that up. And obviously there are the Kardashians.

Surnames for girls are fashionable but tend to be a bit marmite. They are often regarded as not as 'feminine' which is the really big thing right now (hence all the flower names)

'A' names are generally considered 'on trend' and cool atm.

I think 'L' names are pretty safe choices too.

Names ending in 'i' sound or a hard 'a' sound are also good. (so 'a' rather than 'ia')

Within that I do think its very possible to pick something unusual, with Hawaiian roots, but isn't too out there and not on trend. It does look like Hawaiian names have a lot of sounds that would fit in but be beautiful and different.
