How popular is Arthur ?

It was 43rd last year but its appearing a lot here and other name sites is it really popular?
OH has strongly vetoed my entire boys list bar Arthur but I've got a sinking feeling its going to be top 20 soon.
Our dd is Georgia.
My boys list also included:
Albert (oh doesn't like bert)
Guy (not strong enough)
Alistair (doesn't like it)
Gregory (too frilly?!)
Henry (our surname starts with H and he doesn't like double h)
Edward/teddy (he thinks it would become Ed or Eddy which neither of us like)
Charles (he thinks it would become Charlie which I really dislike)

Any thoughts/suggestions?

How pregnant are you? Tbh if it's a name you both like and agree on, I'd not worry about it.

I have 2 top 10 names, 1 in the top 20 and one which isn't in the top 100.

I can honestly say whether they were popular names or not didn't even enter my head.

People get too wrapped up in having a unique name imo. Far better to go with what you like and can live with.

You're probably right there actually I completely ruled out looking at top 50 names with dd as I didn't want her to be one of a few in her school and she's got another Georgia in her current class at preschool and a further one when she moves up a group!

I don't think it will become top 20, it's just not got universal appeal. I really like it though.

We have a 40yr old Charles in the family and he has only ever been know as Charles. So it really isn't inevitable that a name will be shortened.

stormyboots · 23/04/2015 13:29

Arthur is a nice name btw Smile

glittertits · 23/04/2015 13:36

Agree with stormy, I know a 34 year old Andrew who is only Andrew, never Andy.

mrsmeerkat · 23/04/2015 13:36

I would go for it. It goes really well with Georgia.

PannaDoll · 23/04/2015 13:39

I know three Arthur's under three.

fionadal · 23/04/2015 13:42

I know two Arthurs under 6 - not hugely popular round here. There are many more Reubens, Tobys and Theos.

It's a nice name and has lovely shortenings: Artie/Art

I understand where you're coming from OP. Having a boy in a few weeks' and arthur was the only boys name myself and DH agreed on. I liked that it was classic but not too popular. However, it has definitely risen in popularity and seems to be quite 'trendy/ old man chic'. This doesn't bother me particularly but at the same time I'd rather go for something that doesn't necessarily follow a trend but is a classic. Just my opinion really but I get where you're coming from. We have instead decided on Edward (Eddie for short).

Heleng1982 · 23/04/2015 15:50

I love Arthur it was top of my list but dh didn't like it, it's such a lovely name use it if you like it Smile

Wishful80smontage · 23/04/2015 16:56

Thanks for opinions been helpful.
blondie that's interesting as I've been thinking is it too vintage rather than a classic . I'd be worried about it dating in a way that Henry/Edward/Charles wouldn't.
Need to ponder a bit more I think :)

There's quite a big difference, numbers wise, between top five names and top twenty names. Both my DCs had names which were only just top twenty, and they've never had another child with the same name in their class / Cubs / Brownies / etc.
