Middle name- Snow

Due in November and if we are having a girl I really love this as a middle name. It grew on me much watching a TV programme where one of the main characters is called Snow. First name will be either Alana or Bryony.

Any other wintery suggestions would be great :)

I like it...however in my accent Alana snow sounds like 'a land of snow'

Erm, there are other welsh speakers on mumsnet, itsnotme. Myself included. It's acceptable either way from my experience. There are also lots of lovely elderly ladies sporting the name who pronounce it differently to you. It's not a big deal - there's little difference in the actual sound.
Just sayin.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 23/04/2015 23:22

Didn't say I was the only one now did I, and did sat I might well be wrong. I gave an explanation of why I think what I think, Welsh being a phonetic language and therefore sounds not being interchangeable, but obviously the part of Wales you're from speak differently. The OP wasn't actually asking for alternatives, just an opinion on Snow.

YDdraigGoch · 23/04/2015 23:33

Eira is "eye-ra". I've never heard it any other way.

Canyouforgiveher · 23/04/2015 23:39

I know a little girl called Athena Sunflower. Not a big fan usually of names like Sunflower but I think it really works as a second name with a fairly traditional first name.

Corsu · 23/04/2015 23:50

JemFinch Snow in Chinese is one of the most popular girls' names here. I work with three!

TheRealMaryMillington · 23/04/2015 23:54

I like it
It snowed on the day DD was born (unusual here) so her middle named is Nieve, which is snow in Spanish.

CaminanteNoHayCamino · 24/04/2015 00:00

If you're looking for alternatives I prefer Eiri to Eira. Don't call her Snow if your surname is Good though Wink.

onceuponavino · 24/04/2015 00:13

that's beautiful therealmarymillington :)

thanks so much for all the input. I'm pleased to see so many positive comments regarding Snow! Half expected everyone to hate it lol

I'm a fluent Welsh speaker, know plenty of Eiras and have also said the word plenty of times, and I've only EVER heard it pronounced ey-ra, ey as in 'hey'. (Not eye-ra... that sounds like a very English way of pronouncing it!)

SylvaniansAtEase · 24/04/2015 07:52

Actually yes sorry, saying it out loud, more Ay-ra? It is hard to get it right! I think a more heavily accented version of this nay be what 'eh-ee-ra' is getting at. So the first sound is 'eh' or 'ay' as in hay, if you're not welsh that's as close as you'll get, then a bit of a bounce in the middle 'ay-ye-ra' might get closer to it?

I have very often heard it start eye as in what you see out of though: I-rah. A non Welsh speaker version, but not as pretty and harder sounding I think.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 24/04/2015 11:01

Moomin, is correct, I over simplified the syllables. There are only two, 'Ei' rhymes with 'Hey', and 'Ra' as in 'ra-ra skirt'. 'Eye-ra', sounds like 'Ira (Hebrew name?)', and as I mentioned before, to me doesn't make sense in terms on Welsh phonetics.

Anyway, enough of the linguistics lesson! I'll only reiterate that I think Snow is a nice middle name. I've always liked Rain myself, don't think I'd be brave enough to use it if I'm having a girl.

YDdraigGoch · 24/04/2015 12:55

Yes Moomin, I agree too. That's a better way of writing it phonetically in English.

I know a chinese lady called Xue-Ping, which she tells me means Snow Apple. No idea if she's right.

Blahia · 24/04/2015 13:26

I think Snow is lovely as a middle name. It's kind of magical!! Go for it.

Quasilulu · 29/04/2015 07:25

Eirlys is pretty...snowdrop.

anxiousannie10 · 29/04/2015 08:57

My middle name is Rain, I've lived with it for 37 years, it's been a talking point throughout my life but at school it was sometimes hard for me. When I see names like Storm or summer I often wonder what's going on in parents minds... If I could I'd change my middle name but no point really as I don't ever tell people about it.
There are lots of lovely names out there without choosing weather names. Smile

reuset · 29/04/2015 10:04

It's ok, but as a middle name, and given it's a popular surname, I'd guess it was a maiden, or family surname, placed in the middle as they often are.

Hakluyt · 29/04/2015 10:11

I immediately thought Game of Thrones- sorry. So will lots of people.

Nice. Very sweet but I'd use it as a middle name.

toptomatoes · 30/04/2015 21:48

Also thought game of thrones!

pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2015 21:50

Alana Snow is a fabulous name

Cherriesandapples · 30/04/2015 21:51

I would say Eira as i-rah. I'm welsh!

Stickledpink · 30/04/2015 21:51

Let it for a first name?
