This is top of our list at the moment- 7 weeks to go . Just wondered have any of you heard of/ do you know any little Elion/ Ellion/ Elian's ? How would you pronounce it, do you think Eli could work for short and do you like it ? Thanks in advance !

Haven't heard it used at all. Is it said like Elliot but with a n, or like Eli then with on added? Would you consider Elliot?

SaltyandSweet · 22/04/2015 00:00

Have only ever heard it on the BBC version of Merlin (Elian was Guinevere's brother and a knight), never heard it before then or since. Does sound like a male name though not a favourite

ClementineAndCordelia · 22/04/2015 00:07

Hi Fridgedooropen ,
Yes you say it like Elliott with an 'n' . I do like Elliott , but a friend has an Elliott . Elion is supposed to mean ' Sun God'- ours is due around the solstice which could work quite well !i know of one other who spells it 'Ellion' .

It's kind of cute but sounds like alien

Eli is ace!!

ChaircatMiaow · 22/04/2015 00:14

Haven't heard of Elion before - lovely name Smile

TheNewStatesman · 22/04/2015 04:56

Sounds a bit close to "hellion" to me...

rootypig · 22/04/2015 05:04

I know an Eilon - Israeli family - slightly different but sweet, and I much prefer the softer L. But then, I don't like the name Elliott at all so should probably be disregarded Smile

AmandaTanen · 22/04/2015 07:10

Not heard of it as a name before just as a town in Aberdeenshire.

OurGlass · 22/04/2015 07:10

Sounds like Alien or A Lion

niceupthedance · 22/04/2015 07:26

I read it as sounding like sealion Confused

SanctimoniousItches · 22/04/2015 07:37

I have hear Elian in Spain

MrsRossPoldark · 22/04/2015 07:38

Love Eli but not sure about Elion -

when I glanced at the post I saw Elton & I suspect unless your son is careful with his writing, it might look like that due to the 'I' & 'i' being next to each other?

It doesn't mean sun god. There is so much rubbish on baby name sites! The Greek sun god is Helios (or Phoebus) and the Roman name for the same god was Sol.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/04/2015 09:36

I read it as Elton too.

AlpacaMyBag · 22/04/2015 09:39

I don't know it but I've met an Elias or two (I live on the Continent FWIW), sounds fine to me.

florascotia · 22/04/2015 10:45

Bluestocking - I agree re misleading info on many name sites.

Elian is likely to be Biblical in origin, a variation of names such as Elias or Elijah.

Elion (with the same Biblical origins) is a fairly well-known surname (eg of famous and brilliant US woman scientist).

On the other hand, Elio (boy)/Eliane (girl) are just possibly derived via Latin Aelianus from the Greek word for sun - but they don't mean god/goddess.

In traditional Arthurian texts (not modern re-tellings) Elians (with an 's') was a knight of the Round Table, from Ireland. A second person, 'Elian of Montforz', also appears in the old texts, as a nobleman. Neither was Guinevere's brother; that was Gotegrin; one old version of the tale says that Mordred was her brother, too.

zen1 · 22/04/2015 10:54

I know an Elian (pronounced 'ele' (as in elephant) 'yn'). I like the name as it's a bit unusual.

Tattiesthroughthebree · 22/04/2015 13:06

Elion isn't a town in Aberdeenshire - that's Ellon. Though I can see that Elion could be misread as Ellon.

timelyreminder · 22/04/2015 15:10

I'd spell it Elian, to avoid people thinking it's e-lion.
