Hi all

I posted a few days ago about Alana/Lana which I still absolutely adore, but DH threw Bryony into the works a few days ago after reaching an article by Bryony Gordon. I had never even considered it before but I really like it. My friend thinks it just sounds like a female version of Brian though.

Growing up I always liked the name Briar Rose (as in sleeping beauty) but now think it's a little tacky so Bryony seems like a nice alternative. If not for first name perhaps middle? Alana Bryony, does that go?

Thanks in advance

I mainly hear Brian-y. Not keen.

I also think of Bryony Tallis, Saoirse Ronan's character in Atonement. Which is better.

ProbablyMe · 19/04/2015 16:04

Sorry - I hear Bryony I think 'a bit like Brian'. Briar on its own is nice, or Rose - Alana Rose goes well.

TheCowThatLaughs · 19/04/2015 16:06

I think of someone with frizzy hair, not sure why thoughConfused

RoganJosh · 19/04/2015 16:06

I just think 'girl's name', quite nice, vaguely botanical.

Snowflake15 · 19/04/2015 16:08

I don't think of Brian at all

burgatroyd · 19/04/2015 16:08

I know a beautiful one! So name is glamorous to me.

DealForTheKids · 19/04/2015 16:11

I think 'misspelt'. I know its not, but I prefer Briony by far.

As a sound, I really like it! Smile

glittertits · 19/04/2015 16:12

Another one who thinks Brian.

Do you like Briar? Much better imo.

RabidFairy · 19/04/2015 16:13

I think of the book/film Atonement.

It's a nice name.

NapoleonsNose · 19/04/2015 16:17

I know a couple of teenage Bryonys. I like it, although not so keen when it get shortened to Bry.

Angelto5 · 19/04/2015 16:18

Know a few & think it's pretty.

A lot of names are female versions of male names-
Antony/antonia
Michael/michaela

How about Brianna?

ThisFenceIsComfy · 19/04/2015 16:19

I say it more Bry-o-nee so I don't have that Brian association. I know a Bryony and she is really lovely.

MishMooshAndMogwai · 19/04/2015 16:22

I love it and it was on my list but I cannot get past the Brian thing :(

Also reminds me of atonement, I love the name tallis too but don't think I'm brave enough to use that!

BanKimoon · 19/04/2015 16:28

Like it. The girl off if wishes were horses was bryony so it makes me think of horses. Which is no bad thing in my book as I was a pony mad little girl!!!

CatsAreLikeChocolates · 19/04/2015 16:30

Sorry, makes me think of Bryan, he of the "yoni massage" fame.

Alana on the other hand is lovely!

marmaladegranny · 19/04/2015 16:33

Lovely name - botanical. I have known two Bryonys, both lovely people. It has never made me think of Brian - and I have known lots of Brians!

DianeLockhart · 19/04/2015 16:41

I don't think brian! Totally separate name to me. I quite like it it. Seems out doorsy and down to earth.

Alana bryony sounds fab.

If you want any more suggestions, I think Tamsin and Rowan give off a similar vibe.

Mrsbobdylan · 19/04/2015 17:31

I don't think of Brian at all-totally different sounds (bri-an/bri-on-y) IMO.

I like it but also like Briar Rose. Sounds lovely.

squoosh · 19/04/2015 17:42

Religion teacher in sensible shoes.

Bryony in Atonement was an awful character.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/04/2015 17:46

I have never ever ever thought of "Brian" when I hear Bryony.

I like it, I think "Scottish" for some reason.

Foraslut · 19/04/2015 17:48

Briony is a poisonous plant I think.

Foraslut · 19/04/2015 17:50

It is but different spelling

sweetpeame · 19/04/2015 19:15

Not keen on it (although I love Alana as per your previous post!). IMO middle names are only relevant when they're used to honour someone or have a family/close friend connection so I never really understand why people put as much thought into them as they seem to do. In saying that I think Alana Bryony is a bit of a mouthful but as she will probably never use her middle name it really doesn't matter very much IMO.

Allstoppedup · 19/04/2015 19:18

Loved it until I told DP and he proceded to sing

"Bryony! A girl called Bryony..." A la life of Brian.

Sad

I don't hear Brian when I say it, and never even thought it. I went to school with a Bryony and she was lovely. I really liked her name and we called her Bry pie (which was her nn from her family and she loved it). I also had a Bridie in my class as well (pr Bry-dee)

If you cannot get over the Brian association, Alana Bryony sounds nice :)
