Lettie is a nn for...

I really love Lettie, but can't use Violet as a 'proper' name because our surname is a noun. I don't like Letticia at all. Can anyone come up with an alternative longer name that Lettie could be a nn for?

Or any similar names I might like?!

If you can't use Violet because it's a colour and your surname is a noun, then surely you can't use Scarlett for the same reason?

Lottie is an already established nn for Charlotte so it might be a bit odd to insist it's Lettie, given that then is no 'let' sound in Charlotte.

SunnyBaudelaire · 18/04/2015 16:24

Lottie is seriously cool though

Wafflenose · 18/04/2015 16:31

Scarlet or Loretta.

KipperTheFish · 18/04/2015 16:32

Oh yes! Scarlett would actually be a complete no no! It would sounds even more ridiculous than Violet Blush Still think it's a lovely name though!

And I take your point about Charlotte. I like Lottie as well, to be honest.

I obviously like -ie names. I have two ds with very 'sensible', traditional names, and planning to go less sensible this time! I also love Kitty but struggling to get dh on board with that one.

I know a Lettie.
Her given name is Arlette.

OutragedFromLeeds · 18/04/2015 16:41

There are lots of other 'ie' sounding nicknames.

Harriet - Hattie
Henrietta - Hettie
Penelope - Penny
Georgia/Georgina/Georgette - Georgie
Elizabeth - Lizzie, Betty, Libby
Matilda - Tilly
Camilla - Millie
Abigail - Abby
Hermione - Minnie

KipperTheFish · 18/04/2015 16:49

I like all of those, and all are on the list, except Minnie and Penny because of the noun thing again! And I hadn't thought of Camilla/ Milly. but that's very pretty - shame about the royal connection.

No to Loretta!

soundsystem · 18/04/2015 20:19

Ooh if I met a Lettie I wouldn't have thought of Leticia/Lettuce/Collete, I would automatically think Charlotte. Which is a lovely name!

ReeseWithoutHerSpoon · 18/04/2015 20:22

I know a celeste with nn Lettie.

soundsystem · 18/04/2015 20:22

(I suspect it very much depends where you live as a pp said Lottie is the obvious nickname for Charlotte, and it certainly would be where I currently live, but where I'm from Letty/Lettie is absolutely the go to nickname for Charlotte)

charlyn · 18/04/2015 20:51

How about Elettra? It's a lovely Italian name.

Linguaphile · 18/04/2015 21:03

I think you could probably use any name with a -lette suffix.

maroonedwithfour · 18/04/2015 21:05

Juliett

KatieKaye · 18/04/2015 21:10

Polette - I had a great aunt and a great great aunt both of whom were called Polette

msgrinch · 19/04/2015 14:32

My sisters a lettie, short for colette

TheBossness · 19/04/2015 16:37

I have a friend Arletis who goes by Lettie.

Sophronia · 27/04/2015 13:54

Violetta, Elettra or Lettice (I actually know a girl named Lettice!)
