Is my name a 'brave choice'?

First time poster on this board!

Our first baby is due in the Autumn, we are not finding out the sex but if we have a boy we have decided to name him Milton.

I told my best friend and sister and they both said 'ooh thats very brave' but they were positive and seemed to like the name. I know you don't see many around but are we brave for choosing this name?

I didn't think it was too 'out there' maybe a bit uncommon?

I know a little Nelson...

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 18/04/2015 15:34

Sterilising fluid. Not 'brave' though!

Muskey · 18/04/2015 15:37

I like it very much. Just as a matter of interest what will the baby be called if it's a girl. Sorry if someone has already asked this

rosy189 · 18/04/2015 15:43

Thanks Muskey :) I know this is really am opinion board so I did expect some posters not to be keen on it, buts its nice some people like it :)

We would like Penelope for a girl.

We have never heard of the cleaning fluid, nor have anyone we have spoken to as none of my close friends or siblings have had babies, so we didnt make the connection.

Both names are lovely good luck

scarletforya · 18/04/2015 15:48

I'm afraid 'brave' is probably a euphemism for 'foolish' in this case OP.

Milton is such a ubiquitous product, I can't believe you aren't aware of it. To me it's similar to calling a baby Dettol

rosy189 · 18/04/2015 15:48

thanks so much :) We have kept names secret from most people and they would never guess these names so we are safe til the day! :)

My first thought was also sterilising solution! It is a v well known brand.

rosy189 · 18/04/2015 15:51

Thanks for being honest.

It's not terrible, despite all the obvious connections already pointed out.

I would like to mention the fact that 'milt' is the semen of a male fish though . . .

DinosaursRoar · 18/04/2015 15:51

I'd think "Milton Friedman" - so assume you were politically a bit Thatcherite, or you might be doing the Beckhams thing of naming your DC after the place they were concieved and got frisky in Milton Keynes... Or you had a thing about things being very clean and were naming your DC after the sterlising fluid (walk down the baby aisle of any supermarket and you'll find a lot of Milton products).

It's not a bad name at all, old fashioned and strong enough, although a bit 'surname' for my tastes.

Evanna13 · 18/04/2015 15:53

I think it's a really nice name but as I have a toddler unfortunately my first thought was sterilising fluid.

ScrambedEggAndToast · 18/04/2015 15:53

What, like the sterilising solution?? Sorry OP but if I heard that name that is the first thing I would think of.

OurGlass · 18/04/2015 15:53

Brave? No, just a bit cringey. It will just sound a bit made up to most people. It's the name of sterilising fluid I think, and once you have your baby and keep meeting other mums you may find they tilt their head when you tell them your childs name.

DinosaursRoar · 18/04/2015 15:54

oh god, the fish spunk name would be off putting, that is just the sort of thing teenage boys would be horrible about if they found out... (Always think "does this name pass the 'school bully' test?") never let it be shortened to Milt!

SunnyBaudelaire · 18/04/2015 15:56

Milton sterilising fluid?

squoosh · 18/04/2015 15:56

I had a short and not very meaningful liaison with a Milton. He was pretty damn hot so that's what it reminds me of.

rosy189 · 18/04/2015 15:58

yeah...I starting it regret posting actually but thanks for everyones honest opinions.

Still not worried by the connections to anything, there are plenty of people called Milton at least.

If you like the name go for it.

SoupDragon · 18/04/2015 16:09

You could give it the Starbucks Test and get your DH to say it when they ask his name so they can write it on the cup.

Always remember it isn't you who needs to be "brave" about the name, it is the child who has to live with it every day.

Madbugger · 18/04/2015 16:11

Providing your surname isn't Sfluids you'll get away with it.

HolgerDanske · 18/04/2015 16:12

I thought of sterilising liquid straight away. I reckon just about every single parent you come into contact with will think of it. But if that doesn't bother you then it's not a problem Smile

As the name itself goes, I'm not that keen I'm afraid. And I especially don't like the nickname Milt. But again, if you like it that's what actually matters.

OutragedFromLeeds · 18/04/2015 16:32

There won't be plenty of people called Milton when your DC goes to school. I'm willing to bet he'll be the only one in the country.

bobajob · 18/04/2015 16:38

To be honest I think "brave" is just a polite way of them saying they think it's awful.
