Can't decide!

What do you think when you hear these names?

I love Mabel

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 03/04/2015 22:39

Mabel

matchingmoll · 03/04/2015 22:40

Vera is lovely. I don't think it is that old ladyish, really - it feels quite modern and coolly European.

Vera Farmiga

Mabel is lovely but not the other two names!

funkyfoam · 04/04/2015 00:21

Violette to be known as Vivi ?

BuyMeAPony · 04/04/2015 00:26

I had a gorgeous gran called Vera. I would have loved to have named my DD after her, but I couldn't do it to the poor child. Even with all that family love.

MargotLovedTom · 04/04/2015 00:33

My Grandma (who'd be about 95 now if still alive) was a Vera and she hated it; she used to pretend her name was actually Veronica.

Hyacinth is awful. Mabel, I quite like. I really wish we'd called one of our dds Sylvie. I just love it and I can't think why we didn't use it.

MishMooshAndMogwai · 04/04/2015 00:35

I just couldn't name my child any of those names and would probably inwardly scoff every time I called the register if I had one in my class.

Mabel is the lesser of the 3 evils but Vera and hyacinth are just ridiculous

Mabel! So cute.

mathanxiety · 04/04/2015 00:59

I like Vera a lot. YY to 'modern and coolly European'.
Mabel is a bit twee imo.
I prefer Jacinta (Spanish and iirc Portuguese) to Hyacinth.

VeryVeryDarkGrey · 04/04/2015 09:43

All awful names imo as are all granny chic names. Vera is the nicest out of them if i had to pick one

Fugghetaboutit · 04/04/2015 09:52

How about Audrey?

lisaloulou84 · 04/04/2015 09:54

If you like the old fashioned sort of names, how about Betsy?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 04/04/2015 10:07

I actually think Vera and Mabel are great.
Maud is quite nice. (Maudie sounds a bit like mouldy)
Hyacinth is really really bad, Sorry.

hollyisalovelyname · 04/04/2015 10:16

Vera - Duckworth. Awful- harsh sounding word.
Hyacinth - Bucket. Awful, though I love the scent of hyacinth flowers.
Mabel is ok.

Sophronia · 04/04/2015 10:33

I like Vera and Mabel.

How about Jacinta or Jacinda instead of Hyacinth?

SunnyBaudelaire · 04/04/2015 10:38

Mabel is due a revival, definitely, what a lovely name.
My Granny's name, born in 1901.

lurkymclurkerson · 04/04/2015 18:47

Vera is pretty, Mabel is my cat. I prefer Cynthia to Hyacinth personally.

stormyboots · 04/04/2015 20:17

Mabel is a very pretty name and seems to be becoming more popular.
It doesn't feel that different to me then say Primrose and Ava.

Vera has a more cool vibe and i would liken it to Ivy and Iris.

Hyacinth is very unique and has potential for many sweet nn i imagine. I do think of H Bucket but i doubt the child's eventual peer group would. I remember someone being advised not to use Olive because of some 'Olive on the buses'. I think it was some show from the 60's. Point is some people may associate a name, but with the passage of time and on meeting that person new associations will be made.

All these names are memorable and i mean that in a good way.

StickledPink · 04/04/2015 20:21

Sorry but I think they're all hideous

RoosterCogburnIsInTheJakes · 04/04/2015 20:34

I love them all OP Smile

Vera sounds strong - also I knew a lovely lovely Vera so I'm biased

Mabel is very very pretty

Hyacinth is gorgeous, I'd just be concerned about the Hyacinth Bucket association

AlpacaMyBag · 04/04/2015 20:45

I know an 18 month old Vera, she's very cute.

swancourt · 08/04/2015 08:51
