What can kitty be short for?

I love Kitty but as we have a William I don't think I can use Katherine...

Can it be short for anything else?

Not as far as I know. But maybe you could use it for Katrina?

catzpyjamas · 03/04/2015 15:44

Kaitlyn?

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 03/04/2015 15:45

Kirstin

ThroughThickandThin · 03/04/2015 15:45

Lovely name btw OP.

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2015 15:46

Kathleen

NormaSwilley · 03/04/2015 15:47

Christina

well, Kit is an old nn for Christopher, so ...

LipglossHoney · 03/04/2015 15:48

Katie.

Lady84 · 03/04/2015 15:49

I did wonder about Christina (I really like Kit for a boy too!) but do you think everyone would constantly assume Katherine from Kitty?

Although I see no problem with Katherine if you like it. No one will think any more than that your children have classic names, timeless and classless. It's not as if they are unusual names.

And children are individuals - they don't go through life welded to their siblings. I know lots of people and have no idea what their siblings' names may be.

ThroughThickandThin · 03/04/2015 15:54

I think I'd use Katherine nn Kitty, is she's not going to be known as Katherine.

I think a lot of people will think its a name in its own right. Most Daisy's these days aren't short for Margaret.

LipglossHoney · 03/04/2015 15:56

Is Daisy short for Margaret?

Lady84 · 03/04/2015 15:58

I guess not! i just worry it looks a bit too royal - oh an DH is George!

I have a Katie and her nickname is Kit Kat.

pickwickcrocus · 03/04/2015 16:00

Katrin? Or you could spell Katherine Kathryn instead maybe.

ThroughThickandThin · 03/04/2015 16:03

Yes Lipgloss, traditionally.

YonicScrewdriver · 03/04/2015 16:03

Kate Middleton is a Catherine.

I think the names are classic enough to be ok.

Takver · 03/04/2015 16:03

If you're dubious about Katherine, I'd go for either Christina (lovely name, and don't see any problem with Kitty as a shortening) or Kathleen, which is another good solid 'proper' name for a birth certificate.

Marguerite is the French form of Margaret, and it means daisy.

MaryWestmacott · 03/04/2015 16:07

Lipgloss - yes, because Margaret comes from the french name Marguerite, which means Daisy.

OP - I think Kitty is mainly short for Katherine, but any "Kath" or "Kate" names could be shortened to it. I do think William and Katherine might be a bit 'much' - in the same way having a Charles and Diana would be. People will think you did it deliberately, although you could just always introduce her as Kitty, not Katherine. When she's an adult, if she wants to use Katherine then it's not going to be as obvious that she has a brother William. (I have a friend who has a DD known as Beth but is Elizabeth, most people dont' know she's actually an Elizabeth).

Unfortunately, a royal connection isn't one that's going to be forgotten when they grow up like any other celeb naming issue might be. The names William and Katherine/Catherine will make people think of the Cambridges.

nickdrakeslovechild · 03/04/2015 16:10

If you like Kitty, just go for that on its own. I may be biased

lemonyone · 03/04/2015 16:11

Hi Lady84.

Love the name Kitty.
But… why not just use it as the full name? I say this as someone who called their DD by a more 'formal' name and have always used the (perfectly acceptable) shortening which doesn't even resemble to 'formal' name. It irritates me so much when her 'formal' name is used now and i wish I had just gone for it and not called her the longer version.

I don't think Kitty is such an outrageously out-there name as to need buffering with a 'proper' name.

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps · 03/04/2015 16:11

I like Kitty as a stand alone name. Where we are in Ireland it would almost always be a shortened form of Kathleen.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 03/04/2015 16:12

I used to be friends with a Kitty which was her full name not a nn

nickdrakeslovechild · 03/04/2015 16:13

LOL great minds lemonyone Easter Smile
