Like Sam but not keen on Samuel or Samson. Any genius ideas? I'm afraid we couldn't just put Sam on the birth certificate!

Samir? (Think it's an Arabic name) Samwell? (I think it's a character in Game of Thrones?)

dementedpixie · 28/03/2015 22:38

If you like Sam why can you not just use it??

BikeRunSki · 28/03/2015 22:40

Isambard

ThroughThickandThin · 28/03/2015 22:43

Ooh well done everyone.

All I could think of was Samosa Grin

sailoratsea · 28/03/2015 22:43

Samson
Samuel
Sammy

sailoratsea · 28/03/2015 22:44

Okay. Should have read the OP and not just the thread title.

Samwise - best character in LOTR and guaranteed to be loyal Grin

There is nothing wrong with Sam, no matter how many times people tell you that they will not be taken seriously as a High Court judge, Prime Minister etc. It is a lovely name!

DealForTheKids · 29/03/2015 02:24

My OH is Sam. Names I call him:

Samwise
Samwidge
Sample
Pete (Sampras)
Samosa
Samsaphone

I do like Isambard, Sam for short.

squoosh · 29/03/2015 02:34

I think Samuel or Samson are the only obvious options.

Nothing wrong with Sam on its own though, it's a good strong name that suits man and boy, carpenter and (dreaded) high court judge.

Alternatively you could go for something like Simon Adam Matthew and create an acronym of Sam?

SophieandHerSnail · 29/03/2015 08:11

I love isambard!

Sorry it's just a personal foible about nicknames, nothing to do with future high powered legal careers. I would have Samuel on the bc but DH doesn't like it but also doesn't want just Sam...

I think you should put Samuel on the birth certificate if you're happy with it and just use Sam. A friend has an official Samuel but he's very very rarely known as that (unless he's extremely naughty!!) Everyone knows him as Sam, even his school reports have that on - although he's quite often known at home as Samwell or Sammy wammy Grin At the end of the day, it'll be his choice when he's older what he goes for - with Samuel he'll have a choice, with Sam he won't.

RickOShay · 29/03/2015 08:33

Samphire maybe? It is a marsh plant, quite nice eaten with butter.

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2015 09:55

My Sam has Samuel on his birth certificate. He is usually Sam, but sometimes prefers Samuel himself. I wanted Isambard (I'm a civil engineer) but DH wasn't having it.

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2015 10:07

squoosh has a good idea. I once shared a flat eith a chap whose initials were SAM Surname, and was known as Sam, although his S did actually stand for Samuel.

fairnotfit · 29/03/2015 10:12

Samantha Wink

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2015 10:16

Mine is Samuel. Rarely called that but it will be helpful having a longer version for telling off purposes when's he older and naughty. Grin
