Hi!
I'm 3 months pregnant and me and my partner have been discussing names.. We cannot decide on a single one! We don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet so we are trying to pick a few options for each. I'm looking for a Muslim name as my partner was born here but family is from Libya.. I want something Muslim to carry on the culture however i am white so need something in between. We already have a daughter called Amirah and I can't think of any other names however many books I read. Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone else has been or is in my position.. Baby dust!!!

My daughter has a Muslim friend called Jasmin which I think is a lovely name. I've just Googled and it's french and Muslim.

She has another friend called Zinedine (after the footballer?) but that's not really European is it?

Love some of those names! Making a list now! It's so hard picking something in between. Thanks everyone!

I would be careful with Sameena, it means fat in Arabic. Could it be a mistranslation Providore?

There was another similar thread with lots of good suggestions called Muslim/European sounding names but can't link on phone.

Providore · 31/03/2015 00:32

Ha ha her name is DEFINITELY Sameena - I just checked on Facebook! And she's not fat. I'm sure she's not the only Sameena I've come across, although I'm not sure how else it may be spelt.

Iflyaway · 31/03/2015 00:37

Issa

Grin it does sound nice.

Here in Egypt s is substituted for th, so Thanaa becomes Sanaa for example. Maybe this is what is happening? Thameena means of great value.

Then again, some people call their daughters Goose, so they might just like the name. Smile

SteveBrucesNose · 31/03/2015 03:18

You could go for an anglicised version of a name? Eg Yagoob/Jacob or Daud/David?

Just thinking of the women's names in the office:
Laila
Maryam
Susan
Sonia
Nadia
Dana

Arabic girl names we considered:
Leila (that's DD's name)
Farrah
Aisha
Lana

I also like Zane and Faris for a boy. Good luck!

Sophronia · 31/03/2015 14:51

I've known a few Muslim girls called Sophia as well.
