Name A or Name B?

DH and I have narrowed it down to two names for each gender - don't know what we are having yet.

I know everybody will say 'just wait and see what he/she looks like when they are here' but DH and I are planners, and would at least like a favourite ahead of time!

The names are:

Conrad or Stellan (middle name Wallace)

Cordelia or Artemis (middle name June)

Which one do you like better for each gender? Any other comments/suggestions for combinations?

Merry You should hear the names DH and I got saddled with. The names we are choosing fit in just fine with our family and our social class, thank you. Hmm

So you got 'saddled' with a name and want to saddle your DC with one. Hey ho.

You asked for my opinion, and said you weren't hormonal, so what's with the Hmm?

glittertits · 25/03/2015 17:02

Knew you'd pick up on the word on the word saddled. It was said in jest. I love my name.

The Hmm is to do with bringing social class into naming. I disagree with it, is all. You'd wouldn't get away with calling a name chavvy, so why is it ok the other way around?

I'm happy enough to be called try-hard. But attributing class to a name, and making assumptions about what my family is or isn't is all a bit Katie Hopkins for my taste.

Honestly id go for Conrad but that's because I honestly thought the rest were made up Blush in my defence I'm only just 22

MerryMarigold · 25/03/2015 18:13

Well if I'm going to call someone try-hard, I guess I need to be clear about what they are trying hard to be.

I think chavvy is different as it carries a superior connotation ie. I am higher class (and more classy) than you and therefore have permission to look down on you. You're probably a higher class than me, so I am not trying to be superior in my class, or impy anyone is below me, in those comments, just an observation of a certain group of people in my area and how they name their kids.

(And I didn't make any assumptions about your family. I gave you my opinion of what the names convey to me (not inc. the middle names which I like!), and clearly said I may be doing you an injustice. Sorry if it was upsetting, it is one person's opinion on the internet and doesn't really matter. Like I said, you and dh go for what you like.)

I see Antigone mentioned a lot on these boards, always confuses me as she was such a tragic character, I would find it hard to reconcile it with being a small baby's name.

shakemysilliesout · 25/03/2015 19:53

I don't mind Conrad, I like cordelia.

I think of Wallace as a female name and stellan also seems feminine to me.

glittertits · 25/03/2015 19:55

Fair point made Merry. What's more is, that even after your comment, I do still love the names. That to me is a good sign - if I am aware of the assumptions that are going to be made about them, but still want to choose them, they are probably right for us.

Still very much undecided on the boys name - am now considering Wallace as a first name, and would go back to the drawing board for a middle.

Over dinner we have decided on Antigone June - for now anyway!

Shake - Wallace, as a girls name?

OP posts:
shakemysilliesout · 25/03/2015 20:02

Wallace Simpson- that was my first thought.

MerryMarigold · 25/03/2015 20:03

Friends? Flowers Grin

Love Wallace

shakemysilliesout · 25/03/2015 20:04

OH she was wallis- ignore me

BernadetteMatthews · 25/03/2015 20:06

Artemis is a girl's name?

No way. I never knew that.

glittertits · 25/03/2015 20:08

Absolutely Merry!

Shake Oh good, thought I'd been horribly misinterpreting Wallace and Gromit for all these years!

glittertits · 25/03/2015 20:09

Although now I think about it, I LOVE Wallis for a girl!

Just a bit of factual info, in case it helps:
Artemis was the ancient Greek virgin goddess of hunting and the moon. Twin sister to the god Apollo.
Cordelia = noble but tragic Shakspeare heroine. See 'King Lear'.
William Wallace aka The Wallace = v famous Scottish freedom fighter/ terrorist, horribly executed by the English. Definitely male.
Bessie Wallis Warfield, later Bessie Wallis Spencer, later Bessie Wallis Simpson, married King Edward VIII. Wallis was a family name, from her father's family.

MerryMarigold · 25/03/2015 21:08

Wallace or Wallis. Sorted.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/03/2015 21:24

Stellan and Cordelia.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/03/2015 21:25

Ooh just seen you've decided on Antigone!

I went to school with one. She was ridiculously gorgeous.b

Rhubarbgarden · 25/03/2015 21:31

I love Artemis and Conrad.

SomeSunnySunday · 25/03/2015 21:42

Conrad for a boy.

I adore Artemis, although didn't feel that it was actually useable for us (and would never have persuaded DH anyway) - it's a fantastic, strong name. I quite like Cordelia nn Cordy, but on its own it's too frilly for my personal taste.
