As a sister for Madeleine...any thoughts? It's never been on my radar before but I met a little Samantha/Sammy today and she was so cute; it really suited her.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 14:22

I couldn't because of the association with I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue, but I doubt most people will make that link Smile

Heels99 · 24/03/2015 14:24

ha ha yes, sorry i haven't a clue! But agree most people wouldn't think of that.

I like it, it's definitely due a comeback, 70s names are maybe on the up? And lots of scope for variation Sam, sammy etc

KoalaDownUnder · 24/03/2015 14:30

I sort of want to like it...but I don't? Does that make any sense? (No Grin)

I think it's because I was a seventies child myself, so just can't get to grips with anything like Samantha/Angela/Jennifer/Fiona coming back around...

squoosh · 24/03/2015 14:31

I've always loved this name. And Pamela.

roastpots · 24/03/2015 14:33

Hmmm I'm not that keen to be honest. I really like Sam for a boy but for some reason Samantha doesn't do it for me. Can't really articulate why though - sorry :( I think Madeleine is a much prettier name.

Aelfrida · 24/03/2015 14:35

Koala, I know exactly what you mean! I feel like that about Josephine.

glittertits · 24/03/2015 15:13

Sammy and a Maddy? Not sure I like that.

I'm not too keen on Samantha, as it feels very 80s/90s. I do however LOVE Samantha Jones, so that is swaying me in its favour.

TywysogesGymraeg · 24/03/2015 15:15

It makes me think of Bewitched (just given away my age). Would be v appropriate if she can wiggle her nose (and useful too).

manicinsomniac · 24/03/2015 15:21

I like it. I always thought it was very much an 80s/90s name until recently and the youngest one I knew was my cousin who is now 27.

However, I recently met Samanthas who are 7,11 and 13.

I'm not keen on Sam and Sammy though which I think are probably inevitable.

squoosh · 24/03/2015 15:23

I like Sam, hate Sammy though.

quesadillas · 24/03/2015 16:49

I like Samantha but don't like Sam or Sammy as nicknames. It'd be on my list if I could guarantee only the full name was ever used.

JimmyCorkhill · 24/03/2015 17:00

This thread makes me feel oooold Grin Can't believe my era has come around again! I like it.

sweetpeame · 24/03/2015 17:32

I don't like it, sounds very '80's and not in a good way, sorry.

RL20 · 25/03/2015 12:06

I like Sammy/Sammie Grin
Not too keen on Samantha personally but hey in 10 years time at school her name could be really 'cool' as there probably won't be many around!

Jackieharris · 25/03/2015 13:27

Kind of makes me think of the satc character.

But it is a good solid name.

DontdrinkandFacebook · 25/03/2015 13:29

It's very 70's isn't it? I can't really get past that.

ChickenMe · 25/03/2015 13:41

I love it. It was in my top five for my DD

DontdrinkandFacebook · 25/03/2015 14:12

I think it must be a generational thing. My mum who is 70 pulled a terrible face when I told her some of the very 50's names that are back in vogue at the moment.

I think the rule is that if you can remember it first time around you don't like it.

I'm waiting for a revival of Sharons and Traceys and Donnas and Elaines, then I'll know I'm truly old.

AlpacaMyBag · 25/03/2015 14:14

It's a bit dated, most Samanthas are around 40 or so by now.

But honestly, if you really like it, it's your choice. It will probably be back in fashion in 15-20 years and she will love it then Smile!

Lunastarfish · 25/03/2015 14:20

My DP really wants Samantha for our baby. I do like the name, there aren't many little ones around these days which I like but I have said no as I was actually called Samantha for the first week of my life and DP has a very very common surname so it sounds a little dull for me.

SylvaniansAtEase · 25/03/2015 14:27

Hmm, it should be nice but somehow it's not - all on associations probably - so 70s-80s that it seems to lack seriousness and seems just dated, lightweight, not classic- even though it's a nice shape and sound.

KoalaDownUnder · 27/03/2015 23:40

I think Sylvanians has hit the nail on the head, actually.

What she said is exactly the way I feel about the name Lisa, too.
