Honest opinions needed.

She has a brother zach and a 3 syllable surname.

I don't know the sex but we seem to have a good few boys names we can agree on.

I did not think McCann until I opened this thread Sad

Cakes and little French school girl, yes.

It's a very nice name.
I also know a (grown up) Madelene - would that be better?

sunnyawry · 23/03/2015 23:15

Ok I am lacking some cake knowledge. I need to research this.
I really like Maddy
I really like the name Madeleine.
I don't like Maddison or similar.

I just don't like the snap association and can just already hear dh's wanker brother making some smart arse "joke" about it.

McCann here, too, I am afraid. I wish I didn't.

PacificDogwood · 23/03/2015 23:17

Madeleines Smile

sunnyawry · 23/03/2015 23:19

Santa, that is reassuring thanks, wonder if it is gaining in popularity now?

It makes me really sad that everyone is making this connection and it's putting you off. My dd is Madeleine, is shortened...according to what she fancies using that week. She was the same age as Madeleine McCann when she disappeared, and I can honestly say that apart from the time it was all in the media, and you couldn't help but notice the name on the front of the papers, it has never crossed my mind since...I also know two other madeleines. I very much doubt anyone would be rude enough to say, even if they thought it. And if they do, I would just bloody ignore them anyway! And frankly, it's pissed me off a bit that so many people fell that way, wish I hadn't opened this now, as it's not once ever crossed my mind,

I think it's a lovely name, and if you like it, you should use it. X

sunnyawry · 23/03/2015 23:24

Hmm now I want cake!

To be honest it is DH's name and I wouldn't be giving it such a lot of thought if it wasn't the ONLY name he can suggest for a girl. I do like it but there are other lovely girls names I also like which don't have any sad associations.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/03/2015 23:25

Cake Grin Lemon Madeleine's yum!!

It's a lovely name.

Fiddlerontheroof · 23/03/2015 23:26

It's only a sad association if you let it be. I don't feel sad everytime I say her name!!!!!

If it helps, we had Jessica and Amelia as our other choices xxx

Bakeoffcake · 23/03/2015 23:27

My DD's friend. She's 21 and a beautiful, lovely person. So I think of her when I hear the name.

She does get called Maddy and Mads but I always call her Madeleine.

Velvetbee · 23/03/2015 23:27

My mum's lovely friend.
Beautiful name.

sunnyawry · 23/03/2015 23:28

Fiddler, really sorry this has annoyed you I just needed to get some honest reactions. I'm sure it doesn't cross anyone's minds in relation to your daughter.

Fairylea · 23/03/2015 23:29

Ah I had read the thread right ... I posted McCann and then thought you already had a daughter called madeline and were asking for boys names (disclaimer - I am very tired! ) it seemed horrid to say to someone with a dd already called madeline that I instantly think of madeline McCann... its such a shame. But now I realise you were asking for opinions on the name before choosing it. Unfortunately I think it's just so stuck with McCann in the media. It is a nice name itself though.

Vitamints · 23/03/2015 23:30

Cake. Then Proust no I've never read it. Then cake again. Then a woman I knew as a kid.

I didn't think McCann until I opened the thread.

BossWitch · 23/03/2015 23:31

Cake.

Once you've got used to her name meaning her (iyswim) you won't think mccan, and nor will anyone else after the first time they hear the name. It won't mean anything to your dd or her contemporaries as it will be far too long ago.

Reekypear · 23/03/2015 23:31

McCann. Also it's overdone. Mandy's everywhere.

If you assosiate it with McCann, which you obviously do, hence thread, I would not go there.

flancake · 23/03/2015 23:32

My lovely Godmother Madeleine, we call her Maddy, and the French cartoon character.

That's an honest answer from me.

Ooooooooh · 23/03/2015 23:35

Mandolin, a musical instrument secondly. However firstly I would think of a lovely gentle old lady I know

mathanxiety · 23/03/2015 23:38

She was not afraid of mice.
She loved winter, snow, and ice.
To the tiger in the zoo
Madeline just said, "Pooh pooh!"
And nobody knew so well
How to frighten Miss Clavel...

It's the MN of one of my DDs and I love it. She was born before the McCann incident.

You have no guarantee that a name you choose won't turn out to be the name of the next famous missing child case.

Good point mathanxiety.

Thanks for all your input, very helpful to get so many views. It does seem quite a split response, guess it's quite personal.
