Farrah?

Love this name but my Scottish accent doesn't do it justice as my Rs are too harsh. CAn you think of any similar names? Nothing ending in ie/y due to surname.

Does Farah not work either?

Melonhead11 · 23/03/2015 16:45

OP Farah works well with a rolled 'r' . Here are audio clips of a range of pronunciations: www.forvo.com/search/Farah/pt/ It's rather a nice name, I think.

Melonhead11 · 23/03/2015 21:05

Thanks girls. My toddler saying it is cute but Im just not sure if I'm hardening it with the rolled r..

What accent do you have Melon? It sounds fine in mine :) I have a very generic sounding Scottish accent though.

iniquity · 23/03/2015 22:24

Farah means happiness in Arabic but when I pronounce it it means mouse.
This shouldn't be a problem for you in Scotland though!

Melonhead11 · 24/03/2015 06:57

Aww this is cute as when our dd was born she was tiny with big ears so actually looked like a wee mouse haha.
Edinburgh accent, not overly strong x

I think it will be fine then Mellon. I'm originally from Edinburgh but moved about a bit as an adult. I've been told I sound Scottish but with an unidentifiable accent. A few guesses for Perthshire or Central Highlands nth areas that I've never lived in.

It didn't sound great when I tried it with a Glasgow accent. I quite like it, but I prefer Fallon.

Melonhead11 · 24/03/2015 08:00

No one can guess my accent either. We live in northern Ireland and I'm trying to say it with that accent but I think they'd merge it to one syllable.. Waaaaa

Generic Scottish accent here too and I think it sounds lovely. I also have a friend called Farah with a stronger accent than mine and it sounds beautiful when she says it too, have loved it since I met her years ago. If it went with our surname it would be on my list.

Fiona?

Melonhead11 · 24/03/2015 20:00

Fiona is my sister, considering it for mm, wasn't sure if farrah Fiona was a bit much! X

what about Iona - Fiona without the F?

Farrah Iona?

mathanxiety · 25/03/2015 05:10

I think Farrah would be swallowed whole by the NI accents of all her little friends as she grows up and goes to school. Nothing to do with the Rs, just the way the emphasis is placed on the first syllable in most NI accents.

mathanxiety · 25/03/2015 05:16

The emphasis is on the first syllable in two syllable names.

A three syllable name would be less likely to be mangled.

Farrah is a beautiful name.

How about Flora instead if you are worried about your accent?

Im Scottish by the way and can manage saying Farrah as both a Scottish and Arabic speaker Smile

Melonhead11 · 25/03/2015 08:02

I think I'm missing the point by worrying about my Scottish accent instead of the northern Irish which 99% of people in her life will be using. So hard to find a name that sounds nice said in both!
