Wise MN naming folk,

I'm considering changing my first name (at the ripe old age of 27).

I'd love some suggestions please :)

TIA :)

(I'd also consider a middle name if it went with the first)

Won't this be really weird for everyone who knows you? And even for you? Will you be able to think of yourself as another name?

Ummm, hard to suggest without knowing what you do and don't like. Or even your gender actually!

Good for you.

My mum did this in her late 50s as she always hated her only name. She chose a name quite similar to the old one but much much nicer more suited to her (both short names beginning with A). She really does seem much happier in herself now. Everyone including close family was supportive and got used to it fairly swiftly.

How about Merryn or Merridith nn Merri?

Bonnie is good, also Bella

PeasinPod1 · 19/03/2015 09:40

Please Op tell us your name and more about this/why you want to do? Very intrigued. Will also help us move in right direction with suggestions.

RL20 · 19/03/2015 11:02

Just make sure that you are sure!
When I was younger (around 12 though, I'll add!) I was convinced, and even asked my mum, if I could change my name to Ashanti!!! GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
Yes I was an Ashanti fan at the time. She politely replied, 'Well, you can use that name without having to actually change it by deed poll'. (Obviously she knew how hard it would be for me at that age to tell my friends about my new name!!) So it never happened, and thank goodness it didn't!! Grin

Anyway...
I agree, any clues as to why you want to change it etc?
Do you already have a middle name? You could always add a middle name instead of changing your first name, as my aunty is known as 'Anne' when in fact her first name is Catherine and her middle name is Anne. I only realised this as I grew up!
However it's your choice and I'm sure you'll have support if it's going to make you happier.

Summer
Melody (love that name)
Azalea
Cassia
Coral
Isla
Tiger-Lily!! Grin

Kaekae · 19/03/2015 12:06

I've always wanted to be called Amelia and have even considered changing it or just changing it for work.

Qwebec · 19/03/2015 14:06

Someone I know changed her name in her forties from a v common occidental name to an indian same. It took a 15-30min talk and everyone refered to her with her chosen name, even her v traditional mother.

Go for it
I love the name Joy

BlueBananas · 19/03/2015 14:10

I was going to suggest Joy - lovely name

Castlelough · 19/03/2015 14:57

DH's auntie hated her name and changed in her 20s from Nellie to Helen. We only discovered this at a recent family funeral. It gave us quite a naughty giggle to when her old school friends and neighbours consistently addresses her as Nellie. Her reaction was priceless!

Castlelough · 19/03/2015 15:00

But obviously she is much happier as Helen, so I say go for it!

TheCowThatLaughs · 19/03/2015 18:12

Isn't Nellie a nickname for Helen though? ie was she called Helen but known as Nellie when young?

serendipity16 · 19/03/2015 18:27

I've been considering changing my name recently too.
I'm 35 and i really don't like my name or any shortened versions of it either.
FalconWolfs suggestions are similar to the names i shortlisted for myself.
I really like unusual and nature names.
I am pretty much set on the name Autumn and i'm still thinking about a middle name.
Good luck with picking a name that you love :)

Castlelough · 20/03/2015 09:53

Hi The Cow - you're right about Nellie being a nn for Helen but she was registered at birth as Nellie. And Helen was never used. Then she changed to Helen by deed pole. Maybe she chose it because it was close enough to Nellie to feel familiar, I don't know!

TheCowThatLaughs · 20/03/2015 11:01

Poor aunty Nellie! You can't blame her for changing it can you!
