Leah

We are considering Leah as a name for our baby girl due soon, as it has some history in the family. Am I correct in pronouncing it "Layuh"? I'm not sure I like "leeyuh" as much.

Also, any suggestions for a middle name - Jewish/Hebrew preferred.

Thank you.

I would say Lee-uh, but I might be wrong

LastOneDancing · 12/03/2015 07:11

I would pronounce it Lee-ah.

I think I'd expect Lay-ah to be spelled Leia... as in Princess.

MrsGSR · 12/03/2015 07:13

I have a Leah, everyone we've met so far has pronounced it Lee-ah (so do we). I think that way is the most common pronunciation in the UK.

Felyne · 12/03/2015 07:42

I knew one years ago, it was 'lee-ah'. Lovely name.

One of my favourites, but I think you'll find most people will assume it's Lee-ah and you'll end up having to correct everyone. I've known a couple of the years, both pronounced that way.

FeijoaSundae · 12/03/2015 09:01

Yes, it's Lee-ah to the casual observer. You'd probably need to go with an alternative spelling, if you want Leia.

caughtinthemoment · 12/03/2015 09:09

All the ones I have ever met have been pronounced Lee-uh. You probably want to rethink the spelling if you are planning on pronouncing it differently, unless you don't mind correcting people.

Whitetara · 12/03/2015 10:09

Thanks. what I'm after is the traditional spelling and traditional pronunciation Smile

It's Lee-ah.

I'm supposed to be working and am procrastinating so I had a bit of a google. Apparently it means tired cow...

Leah is the traditional spelling according to google.

If you like the Layuh pronunciation then maybe just use Leia? Also, it means "meadow" or "child of heaven" which is better than "tired cow" (I'm also supposed to be working...).

Leia Miriam is really nice

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/03/2015 12:31

Leah pronounced Li-ah.

Middle names:

Ziva

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/03/2015 21:01

I've only ever heard it pronounced Lee-ah

Thegentlemonkey · 14/03/2015 20:07

I know one Leah pronounced Lay-ah - after she tells people once they usually get it right, it hasn't been a problem for her (& I prefer that pronunciation too)

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 14/03/2015 20:53

I know a few, all pronounced lee-uh. I thought lay-uh was a different name entirely- leia?

BellMcEnd · 14/03/2015 21:02

This was on our list of names but wouldn't have suited any of our boys! I pronounce it Lee-ah. Gorgeous name

MrsBungle · 14/03/2015 21:04

I know a few Leah's. All pronounced lee-ah.

Boysclothes · 14/03/2015 21:08

In prayers at shul we say "lay-ah"... I would guess that's the Hebrew pron.

Everyone would say Lee-ah though.

I love Avivit, Avi for short.
