What's your opinion of alliterative names?

Our surname is Jones and I'm in love with the name Jude if DC2 turns out to be a boy. I also quite like the option of calling him "JJ"
Is Jude Jones too much in your opinion? Middle names would most likely be Anthony or Patrick

My daughter has an alliterative name, unintentionally. I just really liked the first name that we had chosen. Her first name and surname sound really good together.

BreeVDKamp · 11/03/2015 11:30

I think they can work well! I have one through marriage.

Jesse James
Danny Dyer
Sylvester Stallone
Jake Gyllenhaal
Boris Becker
Danny DeVito Grin

Jude Jones is one that works in my opinion! Short and snappy and cool.

MehsMum · 11/03/2015 11:32

I knew a Jane Jones. No one had any problems with it except her, because she thought it was dull.

Alliterative names are fine, I think.

Belazu84 · 11/03/2015 11:37

I love alliterative names. Especially with 'typical' surnames like yours (no offence, I have a very standard English surname too). I think it makes them sound special.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 11/03/2015 11:40

My dd has an alliterative name. Everyone always says how gorgeous it sounds.

TheWhiteRoad · 11/03/2015 11:41

I have no problem with alliterative names. I like Jude Jones very much! I do know a Tom Thompson though which I think is taking it a bit far.

M1985 · 11/03/2015 12:41

I'm wondering about this too. I love Violet but our last name begins with V. Not sure it it sounds silly or not

Dogsmom · 11/03/2015 12:56

I've just given my 12 day old daughter an alliterative name, I do think it depends on the amount of syllables though, Jude Jones are both single syllable and when said out loud it sounds like Ju Jones.

Our surname is single syllable too, begins with an R and we liked the name Rose but it sounded wrong so we've extended it to Rosie and it flows better.

BlueStarsAtNight · 11/03/2015 12:58

I like some, but to be honest I'm not sold on Jude Jones - I think because they are both 1 syllable names it's a bit too much/too terse.

If it was something like Jacob Jones or Jasper Jones then it would be fine, as there's a bit more distance between the J's

Tinkerisdead · 11/03/2015 13:08

My dd1 has an alliterative name S.S
Then dd2 has alliterative first and middle names it wasnt really intended that way just that we really liked the sames.

Altho dd2 lisping her way through her sisters name is amusing.

busymummy2boys1girl · 11/03/2015 15:01

I really like Jude think its a great name!

Sophronia · 11/03/2015 16:11

I think they can be quite striking, depending on the combination of names.

Bowlersarm · 11/03/2015 16:14

I think it depends on the name. Jude Jones is ok, not the best alliterative name, but if you are sold on Jude it's not awful. (Sorry to be on the fence and not more positive)

CountingThePennies · 11/03/2015 16:20

Im sat on the fence about Jude Jones.

I do like some alliterative names, Savannah Smith being my favourite.

Im hoping to call dd2 that if we ever have one

My ds has an alliterative name - two hard c's. I love it. Jude jones is quite nice.

TempsPerdu · 11/03/2015 16:35

Totally understand your dilemma OP, as I'm also a Jones, and really like lots of J names (Jago and Jasper, to name but two)! Personally I don't think I'd do it; depends on the names in question, but to me alliterative names often sound a bit twee. I'd also be a bit worried about it sounding too much like a story book/movie character (loads of these in Harry Potter - Helga Hufflepuff; Rowena Ravenclaw; Severus Snape etc). On the flip side, alliterative names can be very striking and memorable (apparently they're often used in TV, books and movies for just this reason: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AlliterativeName)

Jude Jones is far from awful - unlikely to get teased or anything - but I don't think it flows all that well. Personally I'd be looking for a slightly longer name to go with Jones.

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/03/2015 22:25

As long as the first syllables of the name don't name the sound I think they work really well.

By way of example -

Lauren Lewis works well
Cameron Campbell does not

Bellejournee · 15/03/2015 09:18

Our eldest has an alliterative name - I love it!

Our surname is quite short (5 letters) so went with a longer first name. I think it works best that way. Eg, bit of a rubbish example, but Jonathan Jones works better, rather than John Jones imo.

BikeRunSki · 15/03/2015 09:22

I like it.
I wanted dd to be Kirsten Cooper, but DH wasn't sold on it.

I worked with a girl who had 2 J nsmes and was known as Jojo.
