Tables 4 and 5 are full lists of every name registered in Scotland it's really interesting (or at least I find interesting Grin)

I came on to see if anyone else had posted about this!

Clickable link to BBC story here

Spartacus, Thor, Freedom and Indy featured Grin

charlyn · 11/03/2015 12:48

Thanks I found it quite interesting especially when you compare it the top names in England and Wales. It seems my daughters name is a lot more popular in Scotland. Was surprised by Aria being so popular!

dementedpixie · 11/03/2015 12:59

my ds is 155th on the boys list and dd is 18th on the girls list

Salmotrutta · 11/03/2015 14:21

"Thirteena-Starr"!! Shock

Whatisaweekend · 11/03/2015 18:14

2 Kal-Els!!

SunshineAndShadows · 11/03/2015 19:42

Wynter-Lilly! Welcome to a life of spelling it out!

SunshineAndShadows · 11/03/2015 19:44

But not as bad as Tygar-Lilli! Shame - they're quite pretty names - why choose a life of spelling errors for your DC?

Purplehonesty · 11/03/2015 19:48

Madyson-dyamonds? Poor child how will that ever be spelt correctly by anyone.
And freedom? Pffft. Seriously what are people thinking when they do this.
Khaleesi is a lovely name for a fictional tv character - not a child!

Behooven · 11/03/2015 19:49

Wow, an interesting read to say the least. Naming your DS Baby?!
Confused

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/03/2015 22:25

Baby is where the baby hasn't been registered upon compilation of the list.

Salmotrutta · 11/03/2015 23:04

but "Khaleesi" is a fictional royal/tribal rank from a book!

Like the Dothraki equivalent of "Princess" or something.

Jackieharris · 11/03/2015 23:04

The spelling mistakes are horrific!

Some names are a lot more common than it seems if you add together all the spellings. Esp all the aabbeeyys and lleexxiis.

Salmotrutta · 11/03/2015 23:05

Should also add that "Khaleesi's" actual name is Danaerys...

Ihavenowords · 11/03/2015 23:29

I actually know 'Spartacus'

His mum is a friend of mine, she's been contacted by all the media today regarding his name. Personally I can't quite believe people can be so cruel. Imagine meeting someone aged 30 called 'Hiya'! It's bloody awful

I've name changed for this Blush

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/03/2015 23:44

Jeez - I just can't look away.... Tazmin - is that supposed to be Tamsin/Tamzin? Taz is a bit loony tunes is it not? and a girl called William! and Theophilia, becasue every girl wants a name that sounds like Pedophilia.

JakeyBurd · 12/03/2015 01:37

The boy listed as "Baby" died. Please mind what you say.

Jackieharris, don't you get "youniek" spellings where you are then? They're not errors!

myotherusernameisbetter, you've never heard of Tazmin/Tasmin? Not even Tasmin Archer? I can't see a child named Taz on the list.

Purplehonesty, you raise your eyebrows at Freedom, in a year when there was an Independence Referendum? Not any different from Saoirse really, is it?

I think when people post their name choices here they invite criticism, but the parents on this list haven't asked for your comments, so perhaps ripping into their choices isn't very kind. Just a thought...

myotherusernameisbetter · 12/03/2015 07:35

Fair point Jakey. However it comes across a bit creepy that you've gone and looked up the names people have posted about.

silveroldie2 · 12/03/2015 09:00

From your post Jakeyburd, should we assume that your own children have 'unique' names because most everyone else on here thinks these names are bloody awful.

SunshineAndShadows · 12/03/2015 18:00

You're right they haven't invited criticism. But the honest truth is that the vast majority of people will judge you-neeq names and spelling variations. To pretend it isn't so is at best naive and at worst dishonest. Sadly these children are lumbered with their parents poor choices and I have plenty of empathy for them. Not so much the parents making the ill-advised choices though...

DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 14/03/2015 10:43

I loved reading these stats, especially going straight to the end to see all the names with only one child. I find most of them are "yooneeq" names/"daft" names (IMO)/names from other cultures which are therefore less common here.

HOWEVER I am currently pregnant and like the name Juniper (tribute to my nan called June and like the nature references) and was surprised to see it down there. I know it was unusual and liked that but didn't realise how much so.

I am interested - is it a bit different from the other names down that end of the list or is it just as Shock and I'm deluded??

Even the bbc site said "some unique names includes juniper, sparkle...." And I was like "is juniper really in the same boat as sparkle?!

Namelesswonder · 14/03/2015 10:53

To me Juniper is a place name (Juniper Green) suburb of Edinburgh

myotherusernameisbetter · 14/03/2015 11:09

Juniper is a bit of a "brown rice" type of name and not really the same vein as Maddyson-Dyamonds.

I'd expect Juniper to have siblings called Fox, Wren and other "nature" type names. She'd be dressed in hand dyed organic woolens in gender neutral colour and style. If that helps :)

myotherusernameisbetter · 14/03/2015 11:10

and of the back of Juniper Green, one that only Edinburgh folk will get, I had a friend who was considering the name Craig until she remembered that her surname was Miller :o

FooferFluff · 14/03/2015 11:18

I know a juniper who is 3. I think it's a lovely name and can be shortened to June if she wants it to be more mainstream when older. I don't think it's nearly as weird as naming a child the same as 100s of other children.

SunshineAndShadows · 14/03/2015 15:11

I think Juniper is lovely - its a tree so a nature name
