How do you say it? theres 2 people in my friends baby groups, all spelt the same and one says it like nav-ay-a .. Then n-ee-va and the other one is n-ee-v

I like the last way but dislike it being spelled heaven backwards... How else could it be spelt?

Niamh is the traditional way to spell the Irish name, which is pronounced approximately like Neev.

TywysogesGymraeg · 11/03/2015 10:21

It doesn't matter how it's pronounced, as it's a made up word. There is no right or wrong.

If it's made up, you could also spell it however you want.
Neva
Never
Neveea
Nevarrr
Neveya
etc

Tapwater · 11/03/2015 10:26

You're confusing two names. The Irish name Niamh is an actual name, pronounced roughly 'NEE-uv', though some people do say 'Neev'. Sometimes anglicised as 'Neve'. 'Nevaeh' is a nonsense name made up by people who want their child to be yoonique in the same way as all the little McKayylahs, Ammeeeliahs etc in their class. God knows how it is pronounced. I've never really believed anyone would call their child that. It's like naming your baby after a dopey Internet meme.

ragged · 11/03/2015 10:28

It's Heaven backwards, and why that should be a good name, who knows. Does it mean you want to reverse all the ideas of Heaven?

Has anyone seen Esidarap as a name, yet? Or even better, Yalpdloc?

hellospring · 11/03/2015 10:30

Just why would you do that? Poor child is going to have a lifetime of explaining it. It doesn't even sound nice.

marriednotdead · 11/03/2015 10:30

There are several Nevaeh's round here... The pronounciation I've consistently heard is Nev- AY-ah.

I have nothing else nice to say

hellospring · 11/03/2015 10:31

Sorry op, that sounded like it was aimed at you - it wasn't - the you was for the general 'you'!

Lunastarfish · 11/03/2015 10:32

To answer yourquestion I would pronounce it as Ne-vay-ah but I suppose it is up to the parents howit is pronounced.

Artistic · 11/03/2015 10:33

There is an Indian name 'Navya' that's been around for decades & in Sanskrit means praiseworthy. Naveah sounds like a poor translation?!

crje · 11/03/2015 10:34

Awful name
I would pronounce it neevah if I had to say it.
I would probably just call her
Baby, cutie, miss

SoupDragon · 11/03/2015 10:37

It can't be spelt any other way because the point is that it's heaven backwards.

To get "neeve" you would need the Irish name Niamh as others have said. Which is far superior.

BubbleGuppie · 11/03/2015 10:37

Thank you all! its been doing our heading!!! My friends pregnant and loves 'neev' but didnt know how to spell it.. We hate heaven spelt backwards but thats all we can find on internet and in her baby group :( she thinks she'll just find another name its too confusing hahaha

Agreed. Best stay clear of names you can neither spell not pronounce!

How about Erised? Wink

DontDrinkandFacebook · 11/03/2015 18:52

I would say it Neh-VAY-ah but it's a silly name no matter how you say it.

DontDrinkandFacebook · 11/03/2015 18:54

Really? Someone has called their child Nevaeh and actually pronounces it Neeve?

Is there no limit to how stupid some people can be? Shock

DontDrinkandFacebook · 11/03/2015 18:55

Or Nivea. Confused

It's just a very bad idea all round.

MagpieCursedTea · 11/03/2015 18:56

My friend's SIL has a DD card Nevaeh but pronounces it Nev - A.

MagpieCursedTea · 11/03/2015 18:57

*called

I spent so much time trying to type Heaven backwards that I neglected the rest of my sentence!

DontDrinkandFacebook · 11/03/2015 19:31

All these nonsensical, far-fetched pronunciations of the same daft name make me feel positively cringey with embarrassment on the parents' behalf.

aoife24 · 11/03/2015 19:41

There was a thread on Chat, I think, recently: what question wouldn't you ask Mumsnet and I immediately thought: 'what should I name my baby' or 'what do you think if this name', in part because the poster might be hurt or upset by the answer.
I think this is a case in point. Nevaeh is almost guaranteed to elicit very negative responses.

TheJiminyConjecture · 11/03/2015 19:47

Nevaeh is pronounced Neh-Vay-ah where I'm from.

I'd imagine Niamh is the spelling of 'neev' your friend likes.

Neve is pronounced nev.

Maybe just go with poppy Wink

DozyDonut · 11/03/2015 20:15

Don't get me started on this name! I work in a maternity hospital. Last year 'nevaeh' was very big.
Each time parents would announce the name as tho they had just invented the wheel, and I had to pretend how lovely and original it was Hmm

Always pronounced na-vay-ah but some spelt it wrong, getting the e and a around the wrong way Grin

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/03/2015 01:44

It's pronounced N-vay-er. It's heaven spelled backwards. It's a completely different name to Niamh

munchkinmaster · 12/03/2015 02:12

Well I neveh!

The Niamh thing is cos mh is pronounced v in scots and Irish Gaelic.

HerRoyalNotness · 12/03/2015 02:30

It's pron Ne-vey-ah. Seems to be popular in North America
