Moses or Musa

We were thinking of naming our son Musa which is the Arabic version of the name Moses. Ive always loved that name but I'm finding people's reactions to it quite off putting. A lot of non Muslims Ive told the name to seem to have difficulty saying it which makes me worry about how it will be for my son in the future. I have thought about giving him the English version of the name however Moses is quite an unusual name in the UK and I think people will assume certain things. What do you think? Musa, Moses or go back to the drawing board altogether?

It was a site that said how many babies born a given year were born with chosen name. I'm sure there where not nany Jesus's!

I Have a friend with a russian name and that's exactly what she did. She wanted to blend in easier. You could stick with Musa and keep your options open if you feel pp reaction in your city are OTT.

There were approximately 0 babies called Jesus born in 2013. Moses ranked somewhere in the 500's. I dont know whether it used to be more popular. If I can find the link I will post it.

Just out of curiosity do you think biblical names are more popular in the states because they are more in to religion over there? One of the reasons I didnt want to go with Moses is I thought people would assume I was a born again christian type to name my child that (then their eyes would pop out of their heads when they find out Im actually muslim Grin).

I think you are right it's the importance of the Bible that makes them so popular. I heard that no one would elect a non christian, and Obama had to proove the he goes to church every Sunday. Bonkers if you ask me but I'm Canadian and we don't care about a politician's private life unless it inclues callgirls or hard drugs.

Stick with Musa if you don't want underlying assuptions. But I'm biased as I quite like this name, and even more if it has meaning to you.

I think it probably depends on where you live, as well as your attitude to living through all the club and school certificates that 'aren't quite right' in terms of spelling. I've been shocked how many teachers/secretaries can't spell "Phoebe".

I'd pronounce "Musa" as "Moo-sah", BTW.

Give you child more than one "first name"/"given name". Plenty of my old uni friends have swapped their first and second "christian" names once they turned 18.
