So the name we had chosen I no longer like. I'm quite interested in Irish girls names, some are beautiful & I have close links to Ireland but we are living in England, so I don't want to make it too difficult spelling wise!

We quite like Caitlin, Ciara and Teagan so far, but would you know how to pronounce these just by seeing them written down do you think? Any more suggestions? Thanks!

The only one Im not sure onnthe pronounciation is Ciara but id guess at "K eye ra"

I like Caitlin best of those three, but my absoloute favourite Irish girls name is Aoife, and id not worry about others problem with it Grin

Funkytown · 07/03/2015 09:16

Is ciara pronounced keria

Funkytown · 07/03/2015 09:17

Love love love Aoife

ginmakesitallok · 07/03/2015 09:17

Ciara is "keera". Don't really like Reagan, but the others are lovely.

Funkytown · 07/03/2015 09:18

Niamh ?? Pronounced neeve

Methe · 07/03/2015 09:19

Khe are a

Tea gan

Kate lyne

I like Ciara the most.

OneEyedWilly · 07/03/2015 09:20

Aoife is a beautiful name . Pronounced Eefa

yougotafastcar · 07/03/2015 09:24

See, I would say 'Keira' or 'Keera' too for Ciara, but I am worried about all the 'see-ar-rah' and 'Key ar rah' ways!

Niamh is lovely, as is Aoife but we have a family friend called Aoife

My fave Irish girls name is Niamh I would love to use it one day. I don't have Irish connections so I know people would question it but as you said the names are beautiful. Ciara is really nice but I think some people would struggle with the correct pronunciation especially as there's a singer who pronounces it see-air-ah. Caitlin is lovely too. I'm personally not too keen on Teagan. I like Caoimhe but that would drive me bonkers correcting people all the time

yougotafastcar · 07/03/2015 09:26

Although I could be saying Ciara wrong too, as I don't speak Irish just have lots of Irish roots! Grin

DP doesn't like Caoimhe, I do, but agree with the correcting people!

I know how to pronounce Ciara (I think) as Keer-ra as I have taught several of them.
I have been corrected before about Caitlin, it should be pronounced like Kathleen? Or Kat-leen?
Teagan I'm not sure. The Cornish name Tegan is pronounced with a short 'e' sound (Teggan), but maybe Teagan has a long 'e' (Tee-gan)?

Wenglish · 07/03/2015 09:40

Caitlin or Niamh for me

SuburbanRhonda · 07/03/2015 09:47

If you love the sound of the Irish names, why not choose one and spell it phonetically?

I've worked in schools for years and in that time have come across a Neeve, a Shinade and an Eefa.

GingerLDN · 07/03/2015 09:55

I love Ciara (pronounced the same as Kira) and Niamh. Don't like Caitlin or Teagan.

omri · 07/03/2015 09:55

Yes I'd know how to pronounce those names- but I'm irish!
What about Aisling (pronounced ashling-means dream in irish)
Or Caoimhe (pronounced queeva)
Or Cara (means friend)
Or Fiona?

GlitzAndGigglesx · 07/03/2015 09:56

Suburban I know a Sinead it's a lovely name but some of the spellings on cards and stuff were tragic Grin

APotNoodleandaTommy · 07/03/2015 09:56

Aisling?

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 07/03/2015 10:51

Ciara is great. I'd say kier - a.

Not a fan of Teagan tbh

yougotafastcar · 07/03/2015 11:21

Love Aisling but I fear stubborn family would keep saying Ashley! Cara is lovely, I like Fiona, but is it too dated?

I think Ciara is my favourite still but lots to think about! Thanks

I have an Orla, thought the extra letters would be too much for ex dps family so I anglicised orlaith/orlagh.

I love Bronagh, Niamh and Aoife and they're on my list for dc2- I have 20 weeks to convince dp that people could handle Aoife as it's not all that uncommon now.

My friend suggest Eithne pronounced 'Enya' which I think is pretty too.

VixxFace · 07/03/2015 12:43

See air rah
tee gan

D0nnaO · 07/03/2015 13:21

Niamh & Aoife are my favourites but they may be a problem with pronunciations (I didn't have a clue when u first saw them!) Grin

D0nnaO · 07/03/2015 13:22

I*

jennifer86 · 08/03/2015 16:20

I would also pronounce ciara the same as kiera, OP, I'm surprised so many people have suggested alternative pronunciations as I thought it was one of the better known Irish names. I love the name Niamh but can't quite bring myself to use it as I don't consider myself to be Irish enough! Orla, Aiofe, Aisling and Caitlin are also really nice (although I would pronounce it Kate-lin but think its supposed to be Kathleen).

yougotafastcar · 08/03/2015 16:41

Thanks everyone -still thinking, this is hard!
