Sally or Tamsin

We're expecting DC1 and I'm considering both the above names if it's a girl.

Also like Orla and Connie, but these have both been "taken" by friends recently.

I like 2-syllable names that are unusual but known. Surname is three syllables starting with P.

My worry with Tamsin is that it will become "Tam" or "Tammy". Does anyone know any Tamsins that became "shortened"?

Thanks for all input.

I love Sally the youngest I know is 27. but I think it's fab

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/03/2015 07:08

Tamsin by a mile. Sally is awful.

FunkyPeacock · 07/03/2015 09:19

I like Tamsin/Tamsin but not keen on Tam/Tammy. I don't know any IRL so got no idea if it's a name people are likely to can't to shorten/familiarise

I also like Sally and it's nn Sal but as others have said I don't know any Sallys under 35 ....so perhaps it is due a revival!

Guin1 · 07/03/2015 09:20

Much prefer Tamsin. My niece is Tamsyn (more unusual spelling) with nn Tassy. But I think nn Tammy is fine too.

pilates · 07/03/2015 11:39

Tamsin, Sally is awful.

VixxFace · 07/03/2015 12:41

Sally is probably the worst name I have seen on here. Tamsin isn't much better.

YouGrateMyCheese · 07/03/2015 16:58

As a Sally must definitely under 35 I feel the need to champion my name. Grin Although I've had many opportunities to go by my "formal" name - Sara - I've never really wanted to, since Sally stands out more in my age group and has a friendly, approachable sound. (To my ear.) It ticks a lot of boxes - unique but not weird, easy to say, easy to spell. If Molly, Millie, Tilly, Sadie, etc., are on the upswing, Sally fits right in that trend. I've gotten compliments on it all my life.

I do like Tamsin, too, I must admit - you have excellent taste. Smile

I quite like the name Sally, but it was my grandmother's name, so perhaps I'm swayed by that.

I can't stand the name Tamsin, and I don't like the shorter versions either. They all sound dreadful to my ear. The only Tamsin that I have actually met was shortened to Tammy (or occasionally Tams Hmm)

haleandhearty · 08/03/2015 13:46

Thank you so much for all your input! Seems that Tamsin probably wins out overall. I rather like the shortening Tassy that someone mentioned.

I wonder why there are no Tamsins around - to me, it's such a nice name, easy to spell and has a nice sound to it. But I have never met an under-10 with that name!

I still like Sally, but also Sadie -thanks op who mentioned that.

Will carry on mulling these over.

Sadie is a bit trendy

Sally is fab though

I have never met a horrid Sally (not that I've met that many- Sallies are RARE)

though from your description I am thinking Sally Poppadom

gnarlyoldoak · 08/03/2015 14:35

As a Sally (under 35) I'm hoping I've never met sleeponeday and never meet vixx HmmAngry

VixxFace · 08/03/2015 17:15

You didn't name yourself poor thingGrin

Koalafications · 08/03/2015 17:16

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 08/03/2015 17:21

Tamsin shortened to Tam reminds me of tampons.

GingerLDN · 08/03/2015 17:46

Vixx Grin

Pretty odd to be offended by someone you don't even know not liking your name. I don't even like mine I don't expect anyone else to. It's not Sally though.

gnarlyoldoak · 08/03/2015 17:52

Arsehole HmmGrin

Koalafications · 08/03/2015 17:54

Doubt Vixx will changing their opinion on the Sally's they have encountered now... Grin

GingerLDN · 08/03/2015 17:57

Who me? Charming...

CrystalSkull · 08/03/2015 18:02

I know a Tamsin who says it's frequently mispronounced - it was even 'Tasmin' at her graduation :-(

Despite that, I quite like it and much prefer it to Sally, which conjures up a jolly, fat school dinner lady in her fifties to me (sorry to any Sallys on the thread...).

gnarlyoldoak · 08/03/2015 18:04

Nah I'm not really offended. Suprised though. I really like my name and I've only ever had people say it's a lovely one. Maybe they're all boaking behind my back though Grin. Don't get what's horrid about it though - it's not a particularly ugly/harsh sounding one or one that sounds like something else nasty... Know about 4 other Sally's in their early 30's so not exclusively old-fashioned... To say it's the worst heard so far on Mumsnet (and there have been some horrors) is quite a statement!

gnarlyoldoak · 08/03/2015 18:06

No not you ginger - I was being rude back at Vixx's riposte (even though it did make me laugh) So flipping the bird at her whilst chuckling.

GingerLDN · 08/03/2015 18:34

It may be a regional thing? For example I seen a discussion on here about the name Logan and some were saying it is a chavvy name where they are and others saying it was quite posh. I've only known frumpy Sally's so that's what I see when I think of the name, same as names like Wendy and Fiona. That's not to say this is the case everywhere, maybe just where I am.

KittyVonCatsington · 08/03/2015 18:49

I'm a Tamsin! It never gets shortened BUT it does get mis-pronounced and mis-spelt constantly to Tasmin. I've had it all my life. In fact, my Midwife even wrote it on my MATB1 form as that recently! I shrug it off now but you might want to consider it Grin

gnarlyoldoak · 08/03/2015 18:49

Yes makes sense. Plus most of our reactions to names, if they're not ugly sounding, are down to people we have known that bear them. I was picked on by an Annabel at school, so that'll always be a mean name to me, for example! I shall have to just be ultra glamorous to make up for all the frumpy Sally's out there. (I do try)
